Hi all,

My baby (4 weeks old) has a tongue tie and I was wondering if anyone else has kids who had/have this and if so did you get it snipped/treated and did it improve things?

It seems to be frowned on here to have it done but we have been having dramas with feeding and from what I am reading & finding out about it the problems listed sound just like what I am experiencing plus it seems there are also issues for when they go to solids and dental issues later because they can't use their tongue properly to clear bits of food from their mouth & teeth so I am really leaning towards having something done about it if I can find a doctor who is willing to do it (which may not be easy) but I would like to hear other people's experiences on the issue.

Thanks icon_smile.gif

I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing this. I really never heard of it. Perhaps we call it a different name in the states?
I hope it's resolved so the baby is ok...

My goddaughter was born tongue tied, and the surgery made a world of difference. She had problems eating before the surgery, and had no problems what so ever after. She's 10 now, and still has no problems. The surgery was pretty simple too. Good luck making your decision and finding a doctor if you decide to do it!

Thanks adven68, he basically has a piece of tissue/skin that "ties" his tongue to the bottom of his mouth - his is right at the front near the tip of his tongue which restricts the use & movement of his tongue.

Thanks Jen1977 glad to hear your goddaughter is doing well and that it helped her, did she have the operation when she was a baby?

She was a baby...just a few months old I think, but I don't remember. It's been so long, but yes, she was a baby!

it definitely needs to be done well before he starts to do any kind of vocal experimentation (and all the thbbbtt stuff counts -- it starts long before they make recognizable sounds!!!)

and ---

well if worried about it hurting/blood/etc. --- little baby boys are tortured far worse w/ a different operation only they get!!! icon_rolleyes.gif

now if my mom were still alive, I know what her solution would have been -- she'd have just cut it herself (that's a farm raised mom for ya)

One of my husband's cousins had this done when he was 4 or 5 years old. They found that he was tongue tied during some speech evaulations.
You will usually find the issue sooner if they are breast-fed vs. bottle-fed.
I would recommend getting it done.

OK I have heard/seen it both ways.......we have a friend who is 30 and his tongue is still tied......I see nothing wrong with his speech etc BUT he can stick his tongue out of his mouth (but not as much as a normal tongue) so I dont think it is tied right at the front (where its tied makes a world of difference I have heard)........

I also know a little girl who had hers tied and really had a hard time with speech, so at 3 yrs old they had it done (which i think is more scary for the child).......come to find out it wasnt all because of the tongue tie (she has some speech issues) but the speech therapist still thought it helped some.

I really think if it were my child I would probably have it done (and early).

My son is tongue tied, and we have been to the ENT who refused to cut it and just wanted to keep an eye on it. He is 16 months old and doesn't have any problems with eating or any talking that he does. He just can't stick his tongue out.

Thanks for the info....
Obviously, I don't know anything about it, but I'm sure you and your doctors will come to the best decision!

Hi, My daughter was born tongue tied, at that time her doctor said they don't like to cut the skin because the mouth is prone to infection. they told us to just watch her and if she had any speech problems they would do it then. she is 20 years old now and has never had any problems with her speech! Good luck

My son is 10-years old and is tongue tied. Our pediatrician said not to do the surgery because his own son had it done and it just healed and "grew back." He said the worst that could happen is he won't be able to stick his tongue out at the girls, and he might have a slight speech problem. No biggee. I couldn't say the letter R and had to go to speech for a year, and I'm okay now, so I wasn't too concerned. No speech problem for him, but he can't stick his tongue out that far at the girls. My hubby says he will be just fine. LOL!

Oh, he also never learned to latch on, so I had to pump and bottle feed. I was okay with that too. Now that he is 10, the biggest thing is that he can't stick his tongue out and get whatever it is that is on the side of his mouth when he is eating, but then again he is 10 and makes a mess! He looks so cute trying to get to it though!

Adven68....if you lift your tongue up, it's the little bit of skin that attaches your tongue to the bottom of your mouth. My son's is just bigger I guess and goes almost to the tip of his tongue instead of further back.

My husband is severely tongue tied. He cannot lick his lips or use his tongue to get food from between his teeth. The doctors refused to cut it at birth because they said it would regrow anyway. I'm not sure if that's true or not. He speaks very clearly, with just a slight lisp on his s's.

Our 3 sons are all tongue tied also, but not to the same degree. I have not had any problems with feeding or speech with them.

I was born tongue tied and did have surgery to correct it when I was a year old. The only problem I ever had from it was trouble saying r's and s's. Spent 10 yrs having speach therepy to help. Still have problems talking sometimes but no big deal.

Hey mpitrelli!! I have an aunt in Largo. How's the heat in your neck of the woods these days? It's hot and humid in Ohio.

I couldn't say R's and was in speech with a boy who couldn't say S's. I only had to go to speech for a year, third grade. There was one boy who teased me for it, but for the most part it was a painless experience for me. I thought I was the lucky one since I missed part of my school day to go to speech class and play games, get stickers, etc. LOL! My oldest sister (8 years older) spent hours with me practicing my lessons and tape-recording me saying over and over again, "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog." I wonder if that tape is still around somewhere?!?!?!

My 20 year old stepson just had hit tongue-tied problem nipped a few days ago. They used a laser and it was over in a matter of a few minutes.

The dentist joked that he could now finally kiss his girlfriend correctly. LOL icon_confused.gif

Right now, under his tongue looks like an ulcer (some people call them kanker sores)...a white area that is tender and healing. It's probably going to take a full week to heal. What's weird is that since he is 20 and didn't have it done because of any speech issues or potential speech issues as a child, it was considered cosmetic surgery and our dental insurance didn't cover it. Doh! It was only like $200 though.

Medical insurance wouldn't cover it either? Health insurance really stinks sometimes.
