Hi again all - I don't remember if I ever showed you guys the final product after my first draft of that Nintendo groom's cake... I will ASAP if not.

Right now I'm under the gun on my second "sort-of commissioned" cake project. This one's for my mom though, and is due in less than a week.

Basically I know I can search (and i will!) but hopefully somebody out there can help in a pinch.

1. Can one buy fondant that isn't altogether awful, locally to DC? if not, where to get it online and how fast? I have to say, I don't hate MAKING fondant, but I do hate ROLLING fondant. I'd love to buy sheets of perfectly stretchable stuff.

2. For hand making edible but sturdy/stiff figurines and structures, gumpaste OK? also is that buy-able as well? How about modeling chocolate?

3. Are the above pre-made components paintable with icings or other edible pigments?

Thanks much!!!

You can purchase SatinIce fondant online, and many other kinds, but if you don't mind making it that will be your fastest (and least expensive) option. I don't think there is such a thing as already rolled fondant, but it's something to hope for icon_biggrin.gif ...
gumpaste is fine, you can purchase that wherever you buy your Wilton decorating stuff, or online.
As far as paintable, I think so, but will leave that to someone else to answer...

Both of the above components are paintable! Dry dusting with luster dust, mixing the luster dust with alochol to create a paint, thinned paste colouring, all of the above! Go crazy.

I only make my own fondant so can't asnwer the other one. Gumpaste is perfect for modelling, as can a mixture of 50% fondant / 50% gumpaste to keep it pliable longer (depending on intricacy of project) That you can purchase pre-made (wilton) at michaels or joanns or online as well.

I SO WANT to see your nintendo cake! Do share.... please icon_lol.gif please?

DecoPac.com has product #671 which is a 3 pack of pre-rolled white fondant. Don't have any details though, but you can check out their website.

Thanks all - I ordered some satin ice - decopac won't sell to me as I'm not a business.

it looks like I'll have to roll the satin ice myself still, though - anybody know if it's sticky like MMF when rolling? That's the worst.
