Re: A cake I made on Saturday.

This lady knows my Mother through a mutual friend (but they don't know each other personally). She knows that I make cakes, etc. She e-mailed my Mom asking for my number. When we spoke over the phone, she said she wanted a cake for her son. But she didn't know what she wanted so I'm throwing out all these ideas to her. She finally makes up her mind: Marble rum cake (1 layer) with Chocolate BC and the paisley design (Cake is in my album), and for 18-20 people. I said, "OK perfect" (easy cake for me!). BTW, I charged her $30... She came to my house to pick it up and the first thing she says, "Is that going to be enought for 25-30 people?? Because the cake I get from 'Madeleine' is much bigger than that!" WHAT?!?!? I bit my tongue and expplained to her that she told me 18-20 people. And either way, I used an 10' pan (well enough for 25 people). But I guess she wanted to serve monstrous portions to her guests icon_confused.gif
Meanwhile, my fiance was there and he was upset because she was being rude. She didn't even compliment on how it looked. She gave me the money, asked me again if it were going to be enough for 25-30 people, and just left. I explained to her on how to cut the cake (cut round circle in the center to form another little mini cake, etc) but it just went in one ear and out the other. Not to mention, I felt so embaressed in front of my Fiance icon_redface.gif
Sorry this is long... but I just can't believe this woman!
My Fiance said, "She was probably making a big fuss because she was expecting a cheap price for more people due to the fact she knows my mother."

WHATEVER!

I can see that this would be very annoying, particularly as she told you one thing and then changed her mind or forgot what she told you. A bad customer is a customer good to get rid of.

I just don't get how people can be so darn rude. That was uncalled for. You were just trying to help her understand how to cut it to serve 25-30 people and she obviously didn't think it would. I for one don't want to go to a party and get a slice of cake 4 inches wide. If I wanted a piece that big I would just go buy a whole cake to pig out on icon_twisted.gif

I always follow up with my clients to see how the cake was, but I'm debating if I should even call her. I have to admit, I am a little curious as to how it went with the cake. icon_confused.gif

Don't know how she can complain when she got exactly what she ordered (even though the order was verbal).

In the future, you might want to communicate through e-mail, this way everything is "in writing".

In any event, this woman WAS very rude; her behavior was totally irrational... icon_eek.gif

And if she (really) was so happy with "Madeleines's" cakes then why did she solicit you? icon_confused.gifdunce.gif

I'd just right her off as a "crazy lady" and not waste another minute thinking about her. icon_rolleyes.gif

Janh:

Thanks for your advice =)
I usually do communicate it with via e-mail but this was a reference from my Mother/Friend and it was my mistake... but Geez! how rude, right?

Anyway, thank you all for letting me vent and for your support. This is why I love CC so much.

I can't stand people like that. I've had people tell me less people to try play the game of "Will people not show up?" and have too much cake. Or they forget to add in their family to the number that you need to serve. Or invited people they forgot and didn't chandge the number with me. GRRR.

Your cake did look pretty!

The cake is lovely!

She just thought she would be getting it for $5 since she knows your mom.

Why are the worst customers always the ones who know our moms/husbands/cousins etc?

I know what you mean!
She hasn't even called me or written to me. I was so embaressed with having my Fiance there too icon_redface.gif
He was more furious than I was... I had to hold my tongue because this is a business and stuff like this will come up.

Thank you all for your kind words icon_smile.gif
