I never used to crumb coat but once I started doing this, using the icer or not, the crumb coat is a great insurance policy and I do it all the time!!!

It just depends on your preference I think. I use the icer tip without crumbcoating all the time with no problems.

I have learned with practice that I prefer to do a crumb coat. I think my final coat looks better.

It's a thin coat of icing you do it to "catch" the crumbs in it . You let it set up and then when you do your actual coat of icing it is crumb free.
