I want to do a monogram on my next cake but I don't know, whos initial goes first. Does it go, groom initial, last name initial, bride initial? or bride initial first?

I think it's the bride's initial first.

Oh great, I have been doing it wrong! I put the grooms initial on the left and the brides on the right. I thought it would be set up like a cake topper would be. Thanks for setting me straight!!

I've seen these done and I think they are beautiful. I have a wedding cake to do in February and would like to know how to do them. Is there a tutorial? What's the best kind of Icing to use? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Bride's first initial--Last name initial (usually larger)--groom's first initial. So our married monogram is nWa.

I've always put the grooms initial 1st,the Last name initial center, and the brides initial last...any time you read husband's and wife's names together it always Mr and Mrs, or if their being announced as husband and wife at the wedding they say Mr and Mrs his first and last name...I would think traditionally it would be in that order His,Last,Hers...if not I'll still probably do it the way I always have anyway, just seems right to me...no ones ever complained about the wedding cakes thus far with the initials on it that way yet...

Gesh hope I've been doing it right anyway, I never questioned myself till now icon_rolleyes.gif

From:

http://www.personalizedpresents.com/MonogramEtiquette.asp

Modern Monogram Etiquette: The most common rule is Woman's First Name, Married Last Name, Husband's First Name. So Michaela Elizabeth Gagnon married to Hunter William Sarcia's monogram would look as follows:
M S H

I resesarched this when I got married 5 years ago, and was surprised to learn that the woman's name goes first, too. But so it does.

I've used Royal and Fondant icing..you can slide the font you want to use under a piece of wax paper taped on each end of a cake board and trace over it in royal icing, do several to allow for mistakes and breakage, and it gives you an option to choose the prettiest one too, let it set out to dry and when you get ready to apply it on the cake use a couple dots of icing on the back of it and stick it on the cake and with Fondant you can use cutters....and Tada you got a monogrammed cake icon_smile.gif

This is from the 'Things Remembered' website and I found the same thing on other websites as well.

Monogram Etiquette
When engraving a monogram for one person, we recommend placing the first initial of the last name in the center (and making it larger) with the first initial of the first name to the left and first initial of middle name to the right. So

Jennifer Ann Smith would appear as JSA.

When engraving a couple's monogram for a wedding, anniversary, etc., the first initial of the couple's last name should appear in the center, with first initial of the woman's first name to the left and first initial of the man's first name to the right. So

Jennifer Smith and Ken Smith would appear as JSK.

I've always heard that up until & including the wedding day, the bride's name is first - it's her day to shine. So, her initial first on monogram, her name first addressing the gift cards, ect. AFTER the wedding day, it's always his.

This is how I make my monograms, too. I use stiffer RI to outline the letters, let that dry, and then use thinner RI to "flood" inside the outline. Then, I let the letters dry completely for a couple of days. Once completely dry, I mix super pearl luster dust with lemon extract (ratio: 1/4 tsp dust to 1 tsp extract) and paint the letters. It gives them a nice pearl-like finish. I also use an artist's pallette knife to remove the letters from the wax paper.

CindyM- That's a great way to look at it. icon_smile.gif I've always thought for a more formal wedding, it was man's name first and so on and so forth...
