So, I had 20 minutes before I had to take my older daughter to the school bus this morning. No problem, I thought, all my ingredients & equipment are out on the counter already, I'll just whip up my 2-year-old daughter's birthday cake and pop it in the oven before I go. I've made the chocolate chip cake a million times, so it should be easy, right? True, I've never successfully baked a cake in a pyrex bowl before (I'm making Debbie Brown's kitten on the ball of yarn cake), but I'll just grease the heck out of 'em and be fine. SO . . . I whip, I mix, I fold, I pour, I put the cakes in the oven. ALMOST LATE FOR THE BUS, HURRY, HURRY!!!!!! I take DD to the bus. I return home and find the EGG YOLKS on the COUNTER!!!! Turns out, the cake really needs those egg yolks. Not optional. Nope. Second attempt in the oven now. So much for getting a jump on things . . . Ah, well. I've now underlined the part of the recipe where it says to add the egg yolks.

I know what you mean! I can't tell you how many times I've made a cake and forget to add an ingredient because the phone rings, somebody asks me a question, I think to myself "I need to do a load of laundry" then run off to do it and forget what I've done. I think it comes with the busy lives we all lead.

I almost started frosting a cake yesterday without torting it and filling first! icon_surprised.gif That would have been a disaster since the customer ordered a banana cream filling.

After ruining countless recipes due to 4 children and their friends running thru the kitchen, etc... I have started putting common recipes in a clear sheet protector that I cross off ingredients w/ dry erase marker to make sure I have not forgotten anything... Yes, I feel like a backwards moron that I need to do this but I never just make one thing. I am always baking 3 cakes, cookie dough and bread at the same time so it is easy to swap ingredients.

After I started doing this (along with those really tiny sticky notes to label what is what) I am better able to whip out multiple items without screwing them up!

I did something like that once, I was adding the flour gradually when the phone rang so I set down the cup I had it in and when I returned I forgot to add the rest and didn't realize it until the cake was in the oven and I was cleaning and found about 3/4 cup of flour left. Luckily it was a practice cake!

My MIL forgot to put sugar in a cake one time. We all stood around looking at each other waiting for somebody to say something...she finally tasted it and realized her mistake. Now it's a running joke!

Let's see.... I made scones and forgot the sugar (yuck)

Turkey breast using cinnamon instead of paprika icon_lol.gif

And the alltime winner, Thanksgiving gravy using baking soda instead of flour...... I wish I was kidding - I was hosting Thanksgiving for the first time for my family and my husbands. LOL! My dad still says "Keep Christine away from the gravy....."

I made coq au vin once, which is chicken in wine, cooked it in the crock pot all day, it smelled good, too, and when my family ate it and gagged, I realized I'd used Brandy instead of Burgundy! BIG DIFFERENCE! We practically got drunk off the first bite! Ugh!

I have a excellent recipe for a quick bread I call Rye Surprise. I was putting together a cornbread for a company meal. The company was in the kitchen and we were talking as I worked. I use stone ground cornmeal from a local park -it's an old Mill-since cornmeal is without preservatives I store it in the freezer along with the rye and wheat flours from the same source. They are all packaged the same and I just grabbed the cornmeal out of the freezer, measured it out -talking the whole time- and mixed the corn bread. When I looked in the bowl, as I was about to pour it into the pan I was surprised. It was definitely BROWN not yellow. That was when I actually looked at the package carefully. I had added rye flour rather than cornmeal. After a bit of discussion and laughter, I put put the pan in the oven. It was deemed a hit and added to my collection of recipes.

I once made cupcakes from a mix, and forgot to add the water. There was something different about the batter, but I couldn't quite place it... I baked them, and they didn't seem to be baking quite right... I'm not sure when I finally realized what I had done, but I doubt I'll ever forget the water again! icon_smile.gif

I once made home-made clam chowder - added the clam juice, bacon pieces, potatoes and spices to the broth - but forgot the clams!!! icon_lol.gif Oh well - it still tasted good!!

Hey cakegurl06 and theecakelady47 - my cat also lays in the sink. Why do you suppose they do that??? icon_confused.gif He does it in the winter time as well as summer so it doesn't make sense that it is cooler.

I had my Mom make the icing once, and she doubled the butter and shortening but not everything else... Now that was creamy. TOO creamy!!

And then there was the time I made a chocolate cake and put more flour in when I was supposed to put in the sugar. It didn't make it to the oven because the batter was climbing up the mixer paddles when mixing it. I knew something was definitely wrong!

once made cookies (when I was about 12) and don't ask me how I misread the recipe to say 1/4 CUP of salt instead of 1/4 tsp. icon_eek.gif

also once made a Reynolds plastic wrap peach pie. Put in oven to get out of the way only to get the urge to make another one about 1 hour later, I preheated the oven and well.....the pie didn't make it. I was so mad when I pulled it out of the oven. My mom just said we'll pick it off and eat it. HOW? It was completely incased in melted plastic wrap! I put my fist through it and ended up burning my hand. I've since learned that when things are extreamly hot delicate hands will burn quickly and peach juice clings well to flesh when hot! I've also learned to controle my temper a little better icon_wink.gif

I did almost the same thing yesterday. I was making Debbie Brown's Mushroom cake in a pyrex and forgot to put the oil in. I realized it when I went to clean up while it was baking and the oil was still on the counter.

Ever make a "low fat" cake? All you have to do is leave your melted butter in the microwave and carry on with your recipe as usual. Later, while your cake is cooling, and you go to defrost something for dinner....you stare into your microwave in disbelief at your melted butter! (did this more than once!!) icon_redface.gif

I completely forgot to put butter to my macaroons, my friends still ate them. the next time I accidentally doubled the amount of coconut. My friends still ate them but others noticed.... but I like the original recipe better

When I was a kid (about 20 years ago), my mother used to buy the sugar free kool-aid in the small envelopes. Well, unknown to my brother and I she started buying the unsweetened kool-aid (in the same small envelope) that you have to add sugar to. We were home one day and had friends over after school. We went to make kool-aid for everyone and just mixed the envelope with 2 quarts of water. Everyone started drinking it and needless to say it was gross!!! We always read the packages after that!

When I was younger I was making a Pound cake and for some reason I thought the reason it was called pound cake is because it took a POUND of butter, Luckly my mom noticed before I put it in the oven but we definatly had pound cake for a while. Good thing that its my favorite type of cake icon_lol.gif

I had an employee make some lemon meringue pies once when I had my restaurant. It was lunch time, and we always offered a dessert with the lunch special, that day it was lemon pie. I had a customer pull me aside to tell me that the pie was horrible. I couldn't imagine what was wrong. So I went back into the kitchen and got a piece of pie and tasted it. Oh my my the customer was right it was terrible!!! So I went and asked the employee what recipe did she use for the pie, she showed my and it was the right recipe, but..... instead of using sugar .... she used salt!!!! Needless to say we had to pick up all the desserts and substitute for that day.
