cost of ingredients for this cake? 1 8x3 inch round cake torted and filled with buttercream and 2 10x2 inch round cakes filled with buttercream. All frosting and piping is with buttercream. I made 4 batches of frosting. I made this cake for a friend and since Im new I am doing it for the cost of ingredients and supplies. 3 doctored cake mixes, 4 batches of frosting completed the cake. Thanks

well we will need to go back to what you paid for all of it. Depending on what store and where in the country you are is going to make a big difference on the price. Also without knowing what you used to doctor your cake mix or what brand, or what buttercream recipe you use it is really hard to figure out what the cost is.

You will need to figure out how much each ingredient is.... For example your powdered sugar for your buttercream. I buy a 2lb bag, according to the label there is about 8 cups of PS in the bag. So I take the price, lets use $2.00 for example. So I take $2 divided by 8 equals $0.25 per cup of powdered sugar.

18 eggs for $0.98 = $.05

Hope this helps.

Very cute and colorful cake!

i agree with leily that it's hard to estimate how much a cake is without knowing your recipes or cost for cake mixes, sugar, etc. Another thing to take into consideration is that ingredients will go on sale. for example, figure out your cost using the highest price, not the sales prices. Your friend may ask for the same cake next week when mixes are full price and eggs are not on sale and your cost will be higher!

BTW leily, I'd love to know where you get 18 eggs for .98!!!!!!!!!!!

OH yeah I forgot about this. Not only on sale but whatever stores you shop at use their higher price. I shop at three different grocery stores sometimes so I price everything from one grocery store b/c they have higher prices. It isn't where I normally shop, but sometimes I will pick something up there if I go for something specific there.

LOL me too! I just picked a number for the example. The cheapest I can get eggs is $0.07 each when I buy the large 2 1/2 dozen packs at wal-mart.

Look out ladies! A recent article in the Indpls Star (newspaper) a couple of weeks ago said eggs were expected to increase 20%. I went back thru my numbers and 6 months ago I was paying 6 cents an egg. This week, I'm paying 12 cents per egg....at walmart! The price of eggs has doubled in 6 months and they are expecting to increase another 20%.

Sharpen your pencils!

Are your stores doing the same thing my stores are doing? I noticed they dont' list the price per gallon anymore. Everything is priced per half gallong. Marketing ploy. People wont' react to $2.50 per half gallon but they will throw a fit at a sign that said $5.00 per gallon.

Ooooh, sneaky! They haven't done that here...yet! I did freak the other day when the milk was already up to $4 a gallon. And with a toddler, we go thru the milk!

We've been paying $5 a gallon for milk for a long time, North Dakota has really high milk prices. icon_rolleyes.gif

I'm with you dodibug. We are at $4.00/gallon right now and I have a 2.5 year old. She drinks milk like crazy!!!!

Not excited to raise my prices due to the dairy price increase.

First of all - I just paid $2 a gallon for milk - my boys drink 3 gallons + a week - if it goes any higher I'm going to have to wean them from milk icon_cry.gif

My cheese distributor (for work) told me last week that dairy prices are going up because of so many places trying to make ethanol therefore price of corn is going up, it costs more to feed the cows, gas prices are up - it's more expensive to transport so therefore, we have to pay higher for dairy products.

Alot of customers are complaining (I've seen prices have gone up 30 - 60 cents in the last few months for every item) about the prices and even though I wasn't the one to raise them I have to give customers a reason other than the company is a greedy corporation.

I've been depressed all week as I work on next year's pricing for the catering side! I'm looking at a 20-25% increase just to cover current prices from my suppliers! I HATE that! Summer sausage (which I use on my appetizer table) went up 49%; salad dressing by the gallon went up 16%; Grape tomatoes went up 35%; lousy paper napkins went up 20%.

But I was reminded that my competition will have to raise their pricing also. So I guess it all evens out, competitive-wise.

Now, if we can just convince the customers to see it that way. icon_eek.gif Personally, I'll be happy if my husband's boss takes this into account at his upcoming review! icon_rolleyes.gif

Oh my gosh, butter can't possibly go much higher! It's normally $5.29. I wait til it's on sale for $2.50 and stock up! I have at least 30 lbs. in the freezer! icon_eek.gif

I remember my Granny telling me a while back that sugar was going up. Sure enough, a couple weeks later my GV pwd sugar went up from $.99 to $1.25. And I'd kill for $2 gallon Milk Barbara!!! Can you ship me some? We've been at close to $4 for a while and noticed it's just over now. But then again, shipping is costing more because of gas prices, so I'd end up paying the same anyway. BTW did anyone hear the report about Exxon's profit margin. I'll have to find a article on it. It'll really PO you!

I'm sorry but I just realized that this is an old one. Still trying to find a new one, but was discussing with BIL and SIL the other day and it's the same type of information, just different numbers!

Not to sound rude or anything, but poor ibteana is looking for help and suddenly this thread has turned into a rant about high prices!

I, for one didnt' mean to hijack her thread, but without more information from ibteana about the prices she paid, it will be hard to give her a price. She was asking for an estimate of cost, not how much to charge. There are too many variables.

In my area, cake mixes are normally $2.29, when I doctor a mix, i do the WASC (not sure how she doctors) - using three mixes it would be:

mixes 6.87
sour cream 2.99
flour 3c .39
sugar 3c .63
veg. oil .49
eggs 8 1.36
extracts .20

my BC recipe yields about 7 cups and costs 5.67

That's $18.60, my cost, not including disposable bags, cardboards, foil, dowels, gel colors, cake boxes, electricity, water, gas and any tips or pans you might need.

Now, of course, MY TIME is not included in this, which is the most valuable! I'd charge $25 to get cost back. If I were charging real money, I'd ask alot more icon_wink.gif

Thank You! I think we should all buy a chicken and a cow to help cut costs! but then again I think it would cost more than $1.25 and $5.00 a week to keep the things alive to make our supplies. I wonder how the egg man and milk man makes any money. You know they must get paid a tiny bit for their prodcts before it goes to the stores.
