Ok everyone. I haven't had much luck in the past few days with quick responses on my posts icon_sad.gif I know, I probably ask stupid questions...but I'm gonna try another one.

I'm making a dora and boots cake and I've got images and all....I tried to do a FBCT last night and it worked out ok.....I just really don't like the look of it. I usually just freehand the characters right on the cake and fill it in...but for some reason, that's not working for me this weekend (of all weekends....i have to finish three cakes tonight!!). Anyway, do you think I can make a FBCT just....not put that layer of icing over it? That way, I can just transfer it from the wax paper onto the cake without flipping it? I know that's kind of weird, but I don't like the flat look. I like all the textures of the piping and that's sort of becoming my signature....or something.... anyway, I'll stop blabbering. Do you think this would work or would it break because I don't have the extra layer of support?

Thanks in advance!
Melissa

only if the transfer is strong enough and rigid enough to come off the waxed paper. I think it would be a risk. the transfer is likely to break

Thanks JoAnnB. That is kind of what I thought icon_sad.gif I don't know what happened to my artistic talent this weekend but it's not turning out well for me. I guess I'll have to conjur something up and hope it comes out decent in the end. I'm also making a cake for a charity 3 Day Walk for Breast Cancer party AND my sister-in-law's cake for her wedding party (was married in vegas having a party here). I thought this character cake was going to be the easiest one!!

Just a thought- could you do the transfer backwards and put down a layer of buttercream (same color as cake) then pipe the transfer over it, so it should make it stronger and thicker. Maybe... icon_rolleyes.gif

When I first started decorating.....a loooong time ago, that was how I did my drawings. I piped it on a wax paper, then peeled the backing off and placed it on the cake. It can be done but you have to work really fast. A matter of seconds makes a big difference. A lot of mine broke also and I had to piece them together. I agree with you...I like the textured look a lot more than the flat work. Now, I make a copy of the outline on the cake and freehand the rest in. If you put your completed, frozen picture upside down on a board....peel the wax paper off, then slide it off of the board on the cake, it works best. I repeat...WORK REALLY REALLY FAST ...before it has a chance to thaw out any at all.

Shot in the dark:
The cc member that did the demo on ABC demonstrated a technique for getting even and neat icing: Poke holes in the "outline" so that it kind of puckers out. Lay the sheet with all your holes donw so that the "puckered" spots leave light marks in your crusted BC. Then, go over it with your tip.
I am thinking the same technique would work for what you're trying to do.

what about making the transfer with chocolate or royal? couldnt you just peel off the wax paper then and place it right on the cake?

oooops...I said that wrong. You flip it over on a board...remove the waxed paper....flip it over on another board...then slide it off on the cake.

Link to the thread about the demo I'm referring to. I really think this would work.

I do a lot of FBCTs, and I know what you mean about the "flat look". I think I have an answer for you. After you complete the FBCT in the typical way, and flip it, then you retrace the outlines on the good (but flat) side so it gets a bit more dimensional. I do this also with one particular teddy bear FBCT I do, where I go over the "bear" parts again with the 233 tip (the one that makes hair and grass), blobbing it so it looks fluffy like a stuffed animal.

Just a thought. Hope it helps!

I also think I remember seeing in a Wilton book:

outline in piping gel. flip over and lay on top of cake. Lift the pattern and you are left with a clear outline on the cake. Trace over the piping gel with your colored BC (or whatever icing you're using)

Thats what I do Tomoore...If I don't want to do a FBCT or try it free hand I draw it with a piping gel...let it sit (if I don't want the gel on the cake) and get nice and dry...then lay it on the crusted bc...that transfers the pattern nicely...or do it while it is still wet and go over with your colors

I use the method that Tomoore mentioned above...it works the best for me. Just print out your pic on computer paper, lay a piece of styrofoam beneath it and then go around the outline with a toothpick punching holes in it. When you are done, lay the paper with the holes poking out down on the cake and rub lightly with your finger. It will leave a light impression for you to follow with your icing.

Wow, you guys have given me a lot of great ideas. I REALLY appreciate everyone's help. I ended up using Delightsbye's idea since I already had the transfer done, but I'm definetly going to be using all of your ideas in the future so I can pick out which one works best for me!!! I'll post a pic as soon as I get a chance. It's not my greatest cake, but it's not the worst either icon_smile.gif

1 cake down, 2 to go. Wish me luck! The last one I'm doing tonight I'm using and edible image for the first time AND pre-made gumpaste flowers (since I don't know how to make them myself yet) for the first time.........*sigh...atleast the 3 year old that got her tonsils out this morning is finally asleep .. knock on wood.

THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE!
