It does need to be dense in my experience with it so it will stand up. I just use my regular cake mix but only use 1 tablespoon of oil.

I have used Duncan Hines Devil's Food in the past and it was quite firm.

I have used any box mix, extended for the ball pan, no problem. But I have only used 1/2 of it. I havn't stacked the two halves.

Anytime I use a 3D pan, I always add a package on instant pudding (chocolate for chocolate, vanilla for white) and an extra egg, makes it firm enough to stand up perfect in the pan, HTH!

I always use a box mix for that pan, but it's best in pound cake (OR use my 'extender' recipe) if it is going to be a full ball.

If you are not doing anything else to it......it should be fine......my teapot and perfume atomizer are just plain "Jane" cakes.......

Edited to add: But the soccer ball pan on the other hand should be a dense cake.

A light cake will flatten a bit.

I always use a doctored box mix for my ball pan and it has not flopped yet. (Now that I've said that........) icon_confused.gif
