I'd like to make these animals to stand on top of a baby shower cake. Would fondant be best? How do I do it? How long do I have to let them dry? How do I make them stand up? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You could either hand mold them as 3-d figures with fondant, or, you could roll out the fondant and make them like cut outs, then you can "glue" a sucker stick (I like to use bamboo skewers) to the back of the cut out (when it is dry) by using royal icing as the glue. Or if you have an edible image printer, you could print them out and make image plaques. If you want them to dry hard and fast, I would do a 50/50 gumpaste/fondant mixture instead of just fondant.

Hi! Your animals turned out great. I wanted to suggest (although a bit too late) using clay instruction books for animals. I found some instruction books at Michael's on how to sculp baby animals out of clay, but I used fondant. They give detailed instructions with pictures...I used them for a baby cake I made. There are a couple of pictures in my photos. Hope this helps you the next time!

That book is a great idea, I'll look for it. Let me know the title if you get a chance. I tried to do the animals 3D first but it just wasn't working!

Your animals in your pictures are adorable!

Hi there....

one of the books I've used is Annie Lang's Polymer Clay Characters.
I made the turtle, quliting chicken, the frog, and the blue bird. I found the booklet at Micheal's-they have lots of books that are great for ideas. The best part is they give step-by-step instructions. Also, the clay tools really help and they are usually cheaper then "fondant" tools.
