I am new to cake decorating and I realize that this may sound quite ambitious, but I want to make a 3-D or sculptured cake (Sort of like Eliza Strauss of Confetti Cakes). Do you guys know of any good books or have any useful tips to get me started??
I haven't been brave enough to try a sculpted cake yet, but i know you need a somewhat dense cake.
here's a post on sculpted cakes, maybe this will help you

Winbeckler has a booklet on sculpted cakes you can order from his website at a reasonable price. It has a lot of good information on forming and on supporting the cakes.

MChelle, thank you so much for the link. It was absolutely fascinating. I only DREAM to become that talented!!
Wow, that link was great! I've just spent about an hour looking at the photos and reading (my computer is very, very slow and the pics wouldn't load without refreshing repeatedly.)
I just can't imagine being able to create something like that! Not even in my wildest dreams! Janice
The cake was so great! I've never thought of making a clay pot that way before and doing the fondant upside down! Also, has anyone ever worked with modeling chocolate?
i really enjoyed looking at that link! i printed out all 22 pages. i want to try something like that sometime.
