not sure if it helps any,but the link below has a plastic fish cake pan you could possibly buy so you don't have to carve a cake....the pan is only like $4.50...so it may be worth it to try it out...depending on how long you have till you have to make the cake b/c you would have to wait for the pan to be shipped to you....

I don't know if this will help or not, but I used the directions in Collete's Cakes for the fish cake in my photos. The body of the fish is cut from a 9x13 sheet cake and is cut on an angle from the lower left corner to the upper right corner. The tail is cut from scraps and the upper and lower fins are cut from fondant.
Ordinarily, I would be happy to scan the directions and send to you but my home computer is going to the repairman today.
