Anyone out there licensed in TX? Where did you find a commercial kitchen to rent? I have tried going through my church...no response. I'm not sure where else to look into. Will school kitchens rent theirs out? Any ideas?

I'm in Texas and renting a commercial kitchen. icon_smile.gif

I had to call a lot of churches, bakeries and donut shops unitl I found my place. I don't even remember how many I called and how many no's I heard. Finally I was passing by a bakery that was in the building process (hadn't even opened), so I emailed them. After a couple emails back and forth she finally said yes!!!

I've heard of some people renting from a school before but I don't know how that works. I've also heard some people recommend the local YMCA or the like that have commercial kitchen.

Just pop open the phone book and start calling. When you hear the no's just keep calling. You will eventually find someone that will be willing.

Where in Texas are you?

PM me if you have anymore questions.

GOOD LUCK! thumbs_up.gif

I too rent a commercial kitchen... and agree with jewelykaye - you're going to have to hit the pavement on this one! I did not have luck with any churces... plus a lot of them aren't commercial grade. It wasn't easy (a lot of "no's"!) just keep at it! I rent from a bakery that closes at noon. So I have use of their kitchen after they close.

Thanks! I live in the Dallas area, so not anywhere near Cypress (Houston, right?). I didn't even think of donut shops...I live next to some that just opened, so I can try that. Sounds like a lot of hard work to find one...

How does renting the kitchen work? Do you keep your supplies there, or do you have to carry them back and forth?

Per the health department you are supposed to keep all tools at the commercial kitchen so they don't get contaminated. However, I know many people that choose not to keep their supplies at the commercial kitchen.

I will start the long journey of locating a kitchen to rent. There was a non-profit that rented space but their website is shut down ....not sure if they are still in the business.

My church also has a licensed daycare so their kitchen has to meet some kind of code, I would think.

And I have started making a list of other bakeries, restuarnats, churches, etc..that I can ask.

Naomi - Gina's Kitchen on W. 12th near Lamar rents space.

www.ginaskitchen.com

When I looked into it last year, they charged $20 from 8a to 10p and $10/hr from 10p to 8a.

I did not know that places would rent like that. Very interesting.

We've talked about building a new house and having commercial appliances including a BIG oven, not just for baking, but for holidays too when I need one.

I would love to get legal, but I do not have enough business to do it. In my dreams, I have a kitchen that I rent with a bunch of CC'er types that do this on the side and share the load so we can actually make a profit. I am in PLano and havn't even thought about looking. BUt I think that if I had to pay 10 and hour, I wouldn't make any money with the occasional cake that I do. I would probably do more though!

I guess one day!

Stephanie
