Covering A Square Cake With Fondant
Decorating By Chef_Rinny Updated 23 Jul 2007 , 1:00pm by SeptBabyMom
I did a cake this weekend for a friend that was 4 tiers in chocolate MMF with 3 round 6" cakes and 3 small square cakes around the main cake. I covered all the round ones without a problem but when it came to the square ones I was clueless! They came out awful, with tears and wrinkles. I was able to fix them to make them look ok, but I was really disappointed. Any advice on how to cover square cakes or other shapes with fondant. Thanks.
BTW-the cake is in my photos here it is the one in pink and brown
mostly it just takes practice! but here are some tips: roll your fondant out fairly large (about 2 inches larger than you would for the same size round) you want to make sure it hangs down below the bottom of the cake. have shortening handy to repair any tears that form as soon as you see them. i like to start with the corners first. keep trying, its hard but possible! ![]()

It's not as hard as you think.
Roll out your fondant so the diameter is the 2 x the height +the lenght across the top.
Plce the fondant on the cake and smooth out the top.
Smooth out the corners of the cake next.
Then move on to smoothing the sides. Try not to pull on the fondant because it will stretch and you wil end up with gathers.
I've only ever put fondont on round cakes, but I did my first square one this past weekend. I can remember someone posting it was difficult, so I was nervous about having wrinkles and folds, etc.
Anyways, I didn't find it too bad. It was actually much more tidy than some of my round ones in the past. The corners took a bit of extra time. I found the corners went easier if I went straight down the very edge of the corner first and almost simultaneously worked down those two folds that naturally occur at that point. I just tookmy time and paid special care to ensuring no folds existed and it worked out perfectly!
