Just wanting to know an average of your pricing... let me know your area and what your BC start is and your fondant start is... I am going to do an average for my area based on population and area.. .but wanted to ensure I didn't under or over shoot... TIA!

I am in Delaware and my buttercream starts at $2.00 per serving and my fondant starts at $3.00 per serving. Will probably raise prices at end of this year as everything else is going up!

I think you need to call around and find out prices in your specific area. Other states prices are going to vary, even in your region. It's probably best to do some calling around!

I agree on the variance Jen...even from city to city...I was hesitant to answer because in the podunk town I live in...2 per servin on BC is all you are gonna get. Other towns such as Birmingham start at2.50+ on BC...and I charge according to their averages when I work outside my city. I am getting quite a good reputation and am going to be raising my prices soon ...DH says...you have the rep. for being the baker who can do the ones the others cant...now you need to start commanding those kind of prices! Not that I am duff or anything...just that the folks here who do cakes ( all two of them...not counting me ) are old timers who one doesnt even do fondant and the other is a big fan of tuk n ruffle shall we say..lol

I'm not liscensed, but working on it. But just for reference I'll tell you I've been doing simple basic BC starting at $1.50, and simple basic fondant starting at $2.50. Everything goes up from there depending on how elaborate. Now, I do plan on going up on those a bit once I get into the shop. Probably .50 a serving.

I have established a pretty good rapport with a couple of places, but didn't know how to call without them knowing it was me... what do I say, hey...whata you charge? Or just hey its me and I was just wondering what do you charge...... there is no real direct competition within probably 100 miles because the only other real competitor that is legal does not do 3D, just sheets and weddings... so I have to be competing neck and neck with them at least I would think! wouldn't you?

thanks for everyones help... in response to jen1977, I have done calling around... to all bakeries within 75 miles on either side of me... those that are storefronted, that is why I am asking for other opinions... when I titled post I messed up and put legal, and should have put any bakery.. I know that CC is a wealth of knowledge and would like anyone and everyone in my general vicinity of alabama, so basically my bordering states, being florida, georgia, mississippi, tennessee, and maybe even southern lousiana and the south carolina to chime in.. but anyone's advice is appreciated... I have the basic figures from local bakeries, but just wanted to see what other's who did things other than sheets and weddings were charging as my direct competition doesn't do 3D, thanks!

Hey you! I remember when you were calling around and doing your basic homework! I think it is a good idea to ask here because of the 3D cake factor, even if it is neighboring states, etc. I would think you could start at at least $4.50/serving for 3D cakes....what are you charging for fondant cakes/serving? It definitely needs to be more than that! Wish I was down there to join you! Maybe one day....never know!

Ahh...I see! I didn't see that you were asking about prices for 3D...I thought you were wanting prices for starting at bc and fondant! Sorry about that!

Hey Jen! I think she was asking for BC and fondant pricing, as she stated....then depending on what she finds to be the average of that, then she'll price her 3D cakes accordingly....like 3x or 4x the fondant pricing average....as much as her market will allow, since no one in her area does them!

Am I right Lori? I know we've discussed that before!

I am in middle ga and the average prices here are $1.50 to $2.50 BC and $2.00 to $3.50 Fondant...I ???? the product supplier in the area and she says most people here do not want to pay $2.50 per slice. I personally have been making "practice" cakes and taking them to work and have gotten quite a few people interested. I am now struggling w/ pricing the purse cakes...sneaker..etc. The cost of living here is lower and people tend to love kroger, walmart and sams cake. But I have alot of people that like the not so traditional sheet cake......

sort of run on there...my bad...HTH

well I spoke with a confident yesterday in my state, can't give names, though she isn't direct competition, she is in my state and has been around for years... her theory is this.. she does not cover a cake in fondant at all... she accents in it only.... she charges $2 slice for stacked or tiered cakes no matter how elaborate the cake and charges $25 for a 9x13 or 9" decorated cake.... they DO not do 3D so again I am back into those problems.....

CAMBO-BO you are right, I am getting the same answers round town or around the state here and surrounding areas... range is $1.50 to $2.50.... I will be centered near the gulf coast area which will help some because of beach weddings... but still.... I love 3D cakes... know what I mean....
