I searched the inet all night yesterday and all morning. somhow I feel, that a 2x2 cake piece seems a little bit small, or? anyways, I figured a cakepiece about 2.5x2.5 and came up with these serving charts (single layer, Party Cake)
Squared:
1/4 sheet (9x13) serves 20-25 ppl
1/3 sheet (11x15) serves 30-35 ppl
1/2 sheet (12x1 serves 40-45 ppl
2/3 sheet (15x22) serves 60-65 ppl
Full sheet (18x24) serves 85-95 ppl
Round:
5 inch serves 4 ppl
6 inch serves 6-8 ppl
7 inch serves 8-10 ppl
8 inch serves 12-15 ppl
9 inch serves 16-20 ppl
10 inch servers 22-25 ppl
11 inch serves 25-30 ppl
12 inch serves 35-40 ppl
carakter cake (shaped cake pan) serves 10-12 ppl
is my chart realistic, and does the serving portion double with double layers?

I believe your amounts are pretty acurate. I have always been told that if Cake is the only desert (such as a party) figure a 2x3 piece. If there are multiple deserts then to figure a 2x2 piece b/c most people will take other desserts also.
For a wedding sheet cake I usually figure 2x2 if it is after a meal. I figure a 2x3 if it is dessert only reception.
Also If you double the layers I would figure double the servings, but that is just me.
Hope this helps. Thanks for doing the research and figuring on this one. I will have to copy your post and save it for reference.

Serving sizes are sort of a math problem and mathmatically speaking this chart doesn't work.
A 2.5 x 2.5 size serving is 6.25 square inches and a 9x13 cake is 117 square inches. If you divide the cake size by the size of the serving 117/6.25 you get 18 (rounded down from 18.75). So if you tell someone that they can cut 2.5 x 2.5 inch servings they will run out of cake and be upset.
an 11x15 would serve-26
12x18 - 34
and so on
a 12 inch round would serve 18 if you cut 2.5 x 2.5 servings.
Your serving sizes would only double for two layer cakes if you cut the serving sizes down to half the size (1.25 x 1.25 x 4) if you still cut a 4" cake in 2.5 x 2.5 servings they would just get twice as much cake and your servings would stay the same.
I hope that helped some and didn't just make it more confusing.
I always use 2x2 inch servings and 1 x 2 for weddings and have never had anyone complain about running out of cake or anything.
