Hi. I was told today that tuk-n-ruffle is out. Is this true? I want others opinions. Thanks.
If you mean out of style, i would say thats been for awhile. At least it has been here. I've been decorating for 15 years and have used it exactly once.
Ah out of style...now see that never came to mind with what she could've meant but now it makes sense.... if that is what she meant I'd have to agree.... I haven't seen a wedding cake use that in so long and the last one I remember seeing was my best friends wedding cake 10 years ago... I've been to 4 weddings since and none of them used it lol.
They sell the tuknruffled boards in my local craft store and they NEVER sell any not even when they reduce for quick sell.... it never sells lmao
I mean is it out of style. I did see one cake I really loved posted here today and they used tuk-n-ruffle. It looked really nice. How much do people really notice it? I only noticed it in this picture because I really loved the cake and looked at every details.
i hope no one gets upset, i say this as a 22 year old! but the ruffle thing is very "old lady who owns cats". lol. very out of style in my opinion. but i also consider fountains and staircases to be an out of style, 80's kind of thing. hope i didn't offend anyone! just a personal opinion!
Didn't offend me lol I'm only 28 but I haven't honestly seen any cakes that look really great with that in 10 years... and heck that one didn't look too good either lol. I see alot on Wilton's site that look alright but they are professional photos and stuff and I just don't think it's the thing right now I think the thing now adays is bright and flashy lol.
I have a 20lb. box of that stuff in my attic. Could not get rid of it at my last 2 yard sales. I keep trying to think of something to do with it.
I have to agree with beccakelly (I'm 29). Someone gave me a box of it last year for Christmas and I keep shifting it from one spot to another because I know I'll never use it on a cake unless someone very specifically requests it. Knowing my step-mother though she very well might want it one day. She knows what she likes and while most of the time it is classy, there are a few things that are definately past their time shall we say. I know thing run in cycles, but to me there are so many prettier ways to cover your board and dress up your cake!
Ah....Throw it out!! HA!HA! It is out of style and like someone put it...kinda old ladish!! I haven't seen it in years!!JMHO
Wow. Everyone seems to agree it s out. Out of 172 pictures I have of cakes 10 used tuk-n-ruffle.
I posted a thread on this topic not too long ago asking if anyone still used this stuff or not, because I had just catered a wedding where the person who made the cake used this ruffle. I hadn't seen it in years and was curious if anyone really still used it or not.
I'm 48, but I also think it's "old lady" looking. Ok, ok, "cheesy" is more the word I would use.
A friend suggested that some "regular" bakeries use it pretty often.
The recent wedding was the first I'd seen it in about 20 years. I didnt' like it when it was "in".
I am 32 and have been under the impression wilton is only one still using this. It went out with big, big bangs and spiral perms.
It's just too tacky looking in my opinion. But to each his own. I couldn't for see anyone requesting it but heck I didn't think culottes would come back either but..........

I'm 28 and I agree with you. I think that the fountains and stairs look dated on most things, sometimes you'll see one done that it doesn't. Of course some people like them and they're welcome to, it just isn't something I like.
oh hunny culottes didn't come back capris were born lmfao
You can put a dress on a duck, but it's still a duck!!!!
a little country wisdom for ya!

HEY! I had a fountain and staircases on my wedding cake! Ok, it was 1990 and I look at the pictures now and I CRINGE. What was I thinking. I agree that I haven't seen the ruffle in about 17 years.
I've used the ruffle once or twice, and I used a real fabric ruffle to coordinate with my Hugs n Stitches cake...but yeah not much demand for it.
I have to say that staircases and stuff are even more out than tuk n ruffle. haha.
LOL...I am glad someone addressed this...I hate it too...someone gave me a box waaaaay back...and I have tried to use it up...sometimes on cakes where its a kinda cheapie thing and I am just in a hurry and dont want bare board but they really havent paid me enough to do anything extravagant...or for a little girl...under 8....cuz to me they are still kinda impressed with ruffles. I am almost at the end of the box thank God! I actually used it once on a cake to hide some bad borders ( 3 hour wedding cake)...lol.

ummmmm..... had a bride call just last night asking me if I did cakes with the fountain, so they must not be that far "out". (She's not old, either!) )
some people still like the fountains, if done well it can still be used well I think. BUT I dont personally care for the ruffle any where.
The fountains can look updated and merge with a more contemporary design but the ruffles just cant.

No I didn't say fountains, fountains can still be nice.... but I think staircases are definitely dated. haha.
LOL! I still kinda like the cakes that are built on tall pedestals with a fountain underneath it. My sister had one that was really pretty.
I'm talking tiered cake with satellite cakes and cheap plastic staircases with ugly bridesmaids going up them. haha.
i had someone email me that they would like me to make there wedding cake in 2008. she said it had a fountain and stairs and little people hahah i didnt know what to say. so i told her if she had a picture to send it to me and then id give her a price . maybe i should tell her this is out of style
Well, if Wilton is selling the ruffles then someone must be buying them...right? I don't care for it either but Wilton wouldn't be wasting their money if no one wanted it. Okay...fess up...who's buying it?

My stairs on my wedding cake did have those ugly bridesmaids going up the steps. I thought I made it look good because I then put Precious Moments bridesmaids all along the table. I"m thinking of my wedding cake now, and I am laughing out loud.

OK - It's me. I love the stuff. Can't get enough. I even still wear ruffled bloomers
Seriously tho - the boxes of the stuff at the craft stores here seem to hold a lot of dust - so they don't move. I did see one recent cake at a wedding that had it - but it was not from a custom bakery...
I think those steps have their place.... have you seen the adorable cake with the graduate and baby and little girl.... that had steps (I think!) I love that cake! Aw shoot I had a fountain on my cake.... i still think it was beautiful! It was very traditional with foofoo! I loved it! Oh yeah im 32. we celebrate 9 yrs next week.
