I use a small hot glue gun. After attaching the beginning of the ribbon with a dot of hot glue, I make thin line of glue go partially around the board (about 6 inches). Then I pull the ribbon snugly across the glue being sure to make the ribbon straight. I continue this method until I get around the board, fold the end over (for a clean look) and attach with another small dot of glue.

This has worked well for years. It does not work well with inexpensive box type ribbon. The glue show through. Satin ribbon works the best.

Some people use beads of royal icing and push a pin through the ribbon for back up. In addition, the pin is positioned so it's in the back of the cake.
