I spent $14.50 on a friggin' CAKE MIX at Williams Sonoma!!

All I did was go in to buy the cute little octopus pan for my DH birthday amd I KNOW it's wrong, but I....
can't.....
resist.....
fancy cake mix......
cute packaging.....
have....
to.....
buy....
it!

WHY? What is WRONG WITH ME??? And I STILL have to add 5 eggs and 2 1/2 sticks of butter to this mix!! For that price they should have at least kissed me too!

I'm such a sucker! icon_rolleyes.gif I'll let you all know how it turns out Saturday.

Oh wow! Don't you just love how they can put a different brand name on something, and multiply the price many times over!?

Can you believe THIS is what I HAD to HAVE????

I put the gallon of milk with it so you could see how big the box is and what came inside it. Nope. No mini chef jumped out to bake it for me icon_razz.gif

That had better be one great tasting cake mix LOL
I am the same way though I see something cute and I have to have it or if there are only a few of something left on the shelf I think to myself "wow these must be good if they are almost all gone" and then of course I have to buy it and normally end up not liking it haha I really need to stop doing that.

The box looks like something packaged from the '40's to me. Is it a picture of a real cake on the front or a drawing of a cake. I think you needed to find an old fashioned glass milk bottle to put in the picture with it. Your gallon jug just doesn't fit.

I don't think you bought it for the mix inside, you liked the packaging. Hope the box is heavy duty because that could be used as a decorative accent somewhere in your kitchen, I am a sucker for packaging myself.

Oh it is - the box is so cool! It is just a drawing on the front, very retro. I may actually put it "on display" on the top of my cabinets with my other various bottles, cake stands and knick knacks.

Lazy_Susan - maybe I should send you the $10 and do a taste test!

I am baking it tomorrow and will let you all know if it feeds itself to me and cleans up after! LOL!

Don't feel bad I've done it as well. It's got to be the packaging. I'm still like an eight year old girl in the toy shop. . . Buy it cause the box is pretty.

Tucking head in shame,

Ok folks, cakes are in the oven!

THere was enough to fill my Bundt Octopus cake pan and 12 cupcakes and one more tiny loaf pan.

The batter was very yummy, very fluffy tasting and chocolate taste is very nice. So we'll see!

OK ladies and gents we do have CAKE!

And I must say it is VERY yummy! Extremely moist, very tasty. The taste of the Blue ribbon chocolate cake made with yellow cake mix as a base posted here (I forget right now by who but I will check) is a bit more unique in flavor than the Williams Sonoma, but this is better than DH or BC, and very, very good. Very nice texture, not too dense, yet solid (if that makes sense).

Cake in octopus pan from WS unmolded perfectly and is sooo dark it is almost black and shiny! Looks delish! The cupcakes had a nice texture to the tops, not too crunchy, very soft inside. Cake did not brown too much as often happens with choc cake in odd shaped pans for me.

So all in all, I would not buy this all the time, but at least once a year for DH's birthday or another special occasion I'd say it could be worth it.

Anyone want to offer to send me their choc cake "mix" I will pay up to $10 via PayPal and do a comparison LOL!!!

Will try to post pics tomorrow!

next time you go in that store do not stare directly into the sales persons eyes. and look away from the light!!! i think everybody has had an incedent of buying something based on our surroundings and then when we get back to the real world we wonder what we were thinking!!!

Here is the chocolate cake and chocolate frosting recipe I use. My customer's love it so much that it is virtually the only cake I make sometimes. Give it a try. I think you'll like it. The frosting is like a ganache but not. You have to let it sit for a few hours to thicken up. It is so delish!!!

so your impulse buy turned out to be worth it. i love it when that happens - takes the guilt right out of it for me! i do have to admit, there are those times that i'd gladly pay silly money for a chocolate fix - depends on my mood & if it's been a rotten day (because we all know chocolate makes everything better). glad your cake ended up being yummy and that you weren't just stuck w/a cute box! icon_biggrin.gif

We do not care for bittersweet chocolate at all (or even semisweet for that matter)! Can this be substituted? Is the bittersweet noticeable when on the cake?

Thanks for sharing what you use!

Laura - your latest update sounded like me when I'm trying to justify to my husband why I bought something! LOL!! I, too, am glad it was good. Hope your DH thinks so too! icon_wink.gif
