I am looking at purchasing my first silver plateau and I need some help with what size to purchase.

I have 2 orders for wedding cakes in September with the bottom layer being a 14" square. So, should I purchase a 14" plateau or should I go with a 16" or 18"?

I've tried looking at pictures here on CC but most of them don't show the base. Plus I didn't know if I should post this here or in the Decorating section.

TIA

Lucky you for getting a plateau... wish I could. Personally I'd go with the 16" one for the extra space around the cake.

DEFINATELY not the 14". it wont look right. just like you graduate the tier sizes, your base should be a little larger as well. i would even consider an 18" so you'll have 2" on edge. with a 16" you'll have one inch on each edge.

really you should determine what youre most likely going to use more often. are most of your cakes 14" or smaller?

I would definitely go with at least a 16", but having an 18" or 20" would never hurt. I bit more plateau is better than not enough. Congrats! I love mine! thumbs_up.gif

I have a 14", 16" and 18"
I use the 18" much more than any of the other ones. It gives a nice "ledge" on the 14" cakes for flowers or petals.

You will get more use out of an 18" than you will anything smaller. Definately give the 18" a good deal of thought.

I concur, go for the 18! I did a stacked cake recently (the pink & brown in my pics) where the bottom was a 12-inch square and it still looked fine.

I got this one and love it:

I would definately go larger. 16 " is a great size. I have a great 16" and you can really use the extra space, also consider square. You can always put a round cake on a square, but not a square on a round. Even if you have to put a small cake on your plateau, you can really dress up the extra space.

If you are considering a round plateau, be sure and measure your square cake pan diagonally (corner to corner) to see which size it will fit best.
