He can decorate cakes! And not just kinda sorta....he is GOOD!!!

So there I was in the kitchen getting ready to go at my latest creation. I am new to cakes myself and everything I know how to do I have learned by trial and error and reading the boards here at CC. icon_biggrin.gif DH wanders in and asks if he can "help".

Ummm, sure honey. But what do you know about decorating cakes?

He tells me that when he was in the 5th grade he had the hots for a girl in his class. That summer the girls mother was teaching cake decorating for kids at the Parks & Rec center behind his house. He thought that he might impress this little girl if he took the class from her mom. She was never impressed, but he sure learned a lot about cakes. And how!

So the first cake we collaborated on was the frog in my gallery. Turned out pretty good. It was my first cake using buttercream and a frosting bag.

This weekend we tackled a last minute baby shower cake. Our first tiered cake and the first time using fondant. His writing is FANTASTIC! He is also great at getting the frosting super smooth.

Finally, this morning we embarked on the hippo cake for my boss. All I did was bake the cakes and make the frosting. He carved, assembled and decorated the cake by himself. I wasn't even at the house.

I am blown away at how realistic the hippo looks and even more impressed at his hidden talents! I knew he was artistic. He loves to draw when he has free time. But I never knew he had cake decorating up his sleaves! The funny thing is that he is a mechanic and is totally into cars and things that go fast. icon_lol.gif You would never suspect that he could make things like that cute little baby shower cake! princess.gif

I am so proud of him! And so excited that we have something we can do together. He already asked when we were doing our next cake! icon_biggrin.gif

Is he the next ace of cakes?? Part mechanic, artist, ckae decorater. Kind of like my hubby. He is mechanically inclined, use to draw in spare time. He always adds input when I am decorating a cake. when I am stumped I ask him for advise. Welcome him in he will be a plus when you get a mind block like I do dunce.gif I have those moments icon_cry.gif Our son wants to blow up a cake and is up for the challenge if it ever occurs icon_cry.gif again icon_cry.gif teenagers icon_cry.gif

Wow, lucky you!

One of my friends on another forum has the same kind of husband. She does all of the baking, and he does most of the decorating, although they are collaborating more lately.

Envious! Of course I am!

I am actually afraid to let him watch Ace of Cakes. We would be blowing up cakes ALL the time if he did! icon_eek.gificon_lol.gif

If you don't mind my asking how old is your hubby??? Guess what my hubby 42, BIL 35 and our 15 yr old son does on the 4th of July???? They make dry ice bombs. My son wanted to do a toilet bowl cleaner bomb this last year and I wouldn't let him. Thank God we were camping at a state park so he couldn't even attempt it. Not to say he didn't do it else where without my permission icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif Hubby, BIL and son are pyros icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif Both hubby and son are into ace of cakes icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif I like there creative ideas to a degree but blowing cakes up icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif Gotta love um icon_biggrin.gif

He is 41. At least that is what his Drivers License says. He is really just an overgrown kid when it comes to things that go fast, make noise and blow up. He claims to be 41 going on 14. icon_rolleyes.gif Gotta love em. *sigh* Truer words were never spoken. icon_lol.gif

Ladies, please, do you really think they will ever outgrow it? Just because your Dads didn't do it, doesn't mean that they didn't want to...

My Dad was a consummate Pyro -- he would bring really great fireworks in from a southern state which shall remain nameless - and we would shoot them off the top of our apartment building in NYC. The show up there was better than the one that Macy's sponsored on the river!

As he got older, he no longer participated in this -- but that doesn't mean that he didn't want to. Even as we became adults, he dragged us to the local fireworks display here in PA! He figured why drive all the way down there and spend money to buy them when he can see them for free here!

Go buy a fire extinguisher, and let them get it out of their system. Make them clean up the mess afterward (including the cake pans, mixing bowl and beater, etc), and they'll never want to do it again!

Even though we camped over our last 4th of July we were invited to a friends party. He went to MO. He brought all kinds of ???? fireworks My 15 yr old and his twin 19yr old cousins along with the ???ADULT were shooting roman candles at each other. My hubby didn't get involved Thank God. But my 7 yr old DD and I spent most of the time just inside the back door Holding our breath and covering our ears because of the loudness. Thank god the wife works at the local hospital and we didn't have any injuries. At least we had a nurse on site. Didn't make me feel any better though.

We don't have kids yet, but he has two boys (Sixteen & Eighteen) from his first marriage. The youngest in particular, is JUST like his father! I just let them do their thing. I figure he is an adult, even if he acts like a kid sometimes. If he wants to be crazy I can't stop him.

I just remind him that while we have health insurance, we do not have disability insurance. So whatever damage he does to himself best be repairable! icon_confused.gif He says if it isn't repairable I will most likely be calling the in a claim on his life insurance! icon_twisted.gificon_rolleyes.gif

Boys will be boys and I love him. And all of his crazy antics! icon_lol.gif

I can relate said the same thing myself. BOYZ Men?? they never grow up. icon_twisted.gif They can be so naughty. I just pray my DD doesn't inherit the gene. But I don't think she will. She loves cakes to much to blow them up. And loud sounds bothers her ears. Do not let him find Ace of cakes or the boys they will they will scheme something up to blow up for sure.
