I am pretty new to cake decorating so I hope I'm not going over my own capabilities, hehe. I am making an Elmo cake for my son's 2nd birthday. I'm going with a 2 layer 9" round cake. I am planning on making an Elmo to go on top of the cake, fashioned/carved out of approx 3 cupcakes stacked on top of each other. I am wanting to have Elmo hold a candle in each hand, but I'm not sure how to do the arms. I want to make everything edible if possible because I want to be able to give the Elmo to my son to eat. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

First off! WELCOME TO CC!

Can the whole thing be MADE out of edible things? I think the best way to do the arms would be with fondant. You can form them a couple days in advance and then let them harden. They could still be eaten...I guess! when it's hard you don't want to! But, it would be made out of something edible!

Maybe someone has a better idea!

I would use a fondant gumpaste mix and mold something from that.

why not make all of Elmo out of rice krispie treats?

the arms will have to rest down on his lap unless you are willing to put skewers inside them to help hold them up.

(and can use other cereals, including cocoa puffs, cocoa krispies, capn crunch, etc. instead of rice krispies to make the treats)

I would place 2 of the cupcakes side by side with the 3rd cupcake on top.....let the top one be the head and the two beneath it be the shoulders and arms with the elbows bent and the arms coming forward towards the center of the body. This way it could all be made of buttercream. You could still make the fists on the arm and have him holding the candles.

If you have it, the 3D stand up bear pan from wilton works great for Elmo, you just have to cut off the ears and star tip it red. There are a few cakes on this site like that. I have on in my pictures but am not experienced enough to know how to post it right here.

Thanks for the welcome and all of the great suggestions. The visual image I have in my head for elmo is him sitting on top with his legs sticking out in front and arms holding onto the candles. I think the hardened fondant would work. I just didn't want to have to dig/pull out toothpicks, etc. before letting my son eat the cake is why I said I wanted it edible, but the fondant I could just take off before I give it to him. How long would I need to let the fondant set for it to get hard? I have never worked with fondant before.

I also really like the rice krispie treat idea. I had never thought of that before. I was planning on using pretzel sticks for support for elmo so I don't see why I couldn't use it to support the treat arms.

I don't have a 3d stand up bear pan, but I saw all of the other people using for elmo and that's where I got the idea for my elmo cake. I'm just doing it on a smaller scale.

I just searched the gallery for "3D elmo". About 10 of them came up. Maybe you could PM the folks and ask their advice. Good luck.

I want to thank everyone again for all of the great suggestions. I was all set to do this cake and my son's interests sort of changed. So, I've decided to go in a completely different direction for his birthday cake. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping it turns out like I want it too.
