When making a gift box cake with a closed lid and placing the lid fondant on the cake (not using a separate cake or styrofoam) i've read about cutting the corners so they meet up etc - but how do you get the fondant on there and keep it straight and even - without it stretching? If I put the fondant on and try to trim it I end up cutting into the buttercream or fondant layer beneath the lid. Any tips?
Thanks!
Debbie
There are 2 ways that you can do it. (Probably more...give her more ideas).
1. After you have iced your cake, roll out your fondant. Measure all sides of the cake. Measure and cut the sides of the box, match up the corners into a roll and wrap on the cake. Now measure the top, including the sides of the box made of fondant. Roll the fondant, measure and place on cake. Use your smoother to get the finish that you want.
2. Make it ahead of time and let dry. Adhere to cake with dab of water, icing or ri.
Hope this helps!
Thanks DebbieTCL - my problem with that is how do you keep the fondant bottom edge straight so it is even all around when you do that? I thought about letting it sit to firm up a little bit but i'm afraid that i'll get the elephant skin look that way.
Thanks again!
Debbie
i was also wondering about this. i was kind of thinking, can i put a strip around the sides of the cake, and then measure and lay a flat piece on top and the wet the edges to stick the side strip and the top of the lid together? anybody done that?
