I use the cardboard rounds (like sold by Wilton) for my cakes. If a cake is larger than 9", I will usually glue 2 -3 together. I cover with freezer paper or the foil wrap from Wilton.

For cake bases, I use foamcore board cut to size. Depending on the size of the cake, I may actually use 2 glued together.

Buy cake drums! But.......don't use Wilton's.
Next best is to buy masonite boards and cover w/foil, fzr paper or fondant.

I cut out cardboard from boxes! If the cake is heavy, I double it. I cover them with freezer paper. It's white, shiny on one side and dull on the other. (naturally, the shiny side is face up.)

I work at a grocery store and the cardboard "bins" that the watermelons come in are very sturdy so I use a boxcutter to cut them in the shapes and sizes I need and then cover with the wiltons foil.

I use foam core boards for cake boards and cover them with contact paper.
