Ok, I have to make 3 cakes for next Sunday, the 18th. The first cake will be a purse cake (never done), the second will be a doll cake (never done although I bought the pan 2 years ago), and the third cake will be sports themed. Of course I am going to cover the purse and the sports one in fondant but I am curious when I should actually decorate them. I am going to bake and freeze them today but time wise I'm not sure when I should do the actual decorating. I've used fondant before and the cakes were pretty good even after a few days but I want them to be perfect. I have a pretty busy schedule, school on tues, wed, and thurs plus a 1 & 2 yr old to chase so my time is limited. What do you guys recommend?

Decorate on sat morning or Friday night when
they're in bed.

IT WILL BE MUCH EASIER WITH WEE ONES ASLEEP-you can take your time and do what you need to do-you can make your icing ahead of time-no problem there and have your ideas or sketches done when they are down for a nap but do the actual decorating with no interruptions (I realize that having them asleep is no guarantee of no interruptions but it's worth a shot!) Sounds like you have your hands full but you will do great!

Thanks, even though I've been at this for awhile, I feel like a newbie when it comes to fondant, 3 d cakes, stuff like that. I guess I'm "breaking out of my shell" and trying new things like purses and doll cakes. I need to get away from doing just plain ol square and round cakes icon_biggrin.gif I'll post pics and reactions next Monday.

I would definetly have everything "prepped" then when the kiddos are asleep your good to go. Good luck. Can't wait to see the picks!

Ok, so the party was tonight and everything went great. I baked, froze, and made icing on Sunday or Monday. I started decorating on Thursday night, did some on Friday, and finished up on Saturday. The girls loved their cakes, Austin well he's a boy and really didn't care as long as he got stuff. Heidi was so thrilled with her cake she went on and on about it, she got mad at her mom for cutting the purse, she wanted to keep it! She also kept telling people about her beautiful cake and how her aunt made it for her. There was hardly any cake left over I guess everybody liked it. I have the pics in my album if anybody wants to see them. And yes, I was a nervous wreck driving the cakes to the party and I didn't calkm down until they were on the tables, I was shaking so bad thinking I was going to drop them, but everything went smoothly.
