I love this cake purse and was wondering if anyone has any ideas what the jewles are made from.

She one of my alltime favorites...have you seen her Harry Winston cake? OMG....just perfection.
She's also a very nice person...I have emailed her and she was very kind to respond and very pleasant.

My opinion is that it is a red fondant covered cake (It seems like red in between the jewels. The jewels are probably made of sugar as the larger ones seem to be slightly transparent. The gold rings around the jewels is fondant painted with gold lustre dust (and vodka).

The jewels look like they may be piping gel, but the cake is definitely covered with fondant. The handle and clasp would have to be gum-paste. because fondant would not set firmly enough to hold the shape so well. What a stunning cake - don't forget to post piccies to show us how yours turns out!

For the bezeled look do you think I could do little circles push them in with the end of a brush then luster dust them. Once they are dry fill them with piping jel? How long do you think it would take to dry?

I think the jewels are a hard candie, sugar boiled and color added (I can't remember the name of it), I love that effect, the gold looks almost like royal icing piped and painted with a gold luster dust. And if it isn't looks like it would be easier (don't really know I have never tried it) then shaping fondant around everywhere. Oh please post if you make this!!! Lovely cake!

Not necessarily...I only use fondant..never gumpaste for my decorations. Although, if I need fast-drying pieces, I dust the fondant with a little gumtex....

adven that is a great tip...so all you really have to do is dust the fondant with the gumtex?

No, you have to work it in.

I think you have the right idea with filling divit-ed fondant balls with the piping gel. The ones on her cake are so uniform, I wonder if its actually cut outs (like spaghettios) but if it were me, I'd go the easier route with the balls. Perhaps there is a little mold somewhere? A bead mold!!

Other than colouring, does the piping gel need to be mixed with anything? I am wondering how it stays in the gold pieces. Does it not drip down due to gravity?

Its pretty viscous stuff, I think it will stay.

as KoryAK said...you need to knead it into the fondant..I just meant that the amount needed was just a dusting on whatever small piece you have in your hand.
