I feel the square pan makesa bigger cake.... am I wrong? Anyways will be making my first 10" square cake, does it use the same amount of batter than the round or more? Thanks for any help in advance

slightly more batter for square and yes does make a bit more cake.

try this:

draw a square.

now draw a circle inside the square that touches the sides.

see those areas in the corners outside the circle?

that's the extra cake a square makes.

Yep a square has more cake than a circle. Doug's example is great (although I am surprised there is no picture icon_confused.gif )

I user a serving size of 1x2x4 for double layer cakes so for a
10" circle = 38 servings
10" square = 50 servings

Here is a link to Wilton site that has links on the bottom for 2" and 3" deep pans. Click on the appropriate link and it will show you how many cups of batter you need for a circle or square pan.

Hmm.. I just went to double check the wilton chart and it is saying that a 10" sq and round both need 6 cups of batter, I would add another 3/4-1cup extra in the square. I would rather have it be to high and cut off than worry about it not being 2" tall in my pan.

So I guess what I am trying to say is use the wilton chart as starting point and then add a little more if needed.

I *never* measure batter! What a mess!! No needicon_smile.gif
Just learn how much you need in each size. A 10" round uses one cake mix. A 10" sq uses 1 1/2 mixes. Two 8" rounds use 1 1/2 mixes. There are many more of course but you get the picture.
Each pan is 2" deep for this comparisson.

In the cake bible it says that a square pan hold 1.33x the batter of a round pan with equal diameter.

The way I work it is that a 10" square is the same as an 11" round, a 9" square the same as a 10" round and so on.
