I feel the square pan makesa bigger cake.... am I wrong? Anyways will be making my first 10" square cake, does it use the same amount of batter than the round or more? Thanks for any help in advance
Yep a square has more cake than a circle. Doug's example is great (although I am surprised there is no picture
)
I user a serving size of 1x2x4 for double layer cakes so for a
10" circle = 38 servings
10" square = 50 servings
Here is a link to Wilton site that has links on the bottom for 2" and 3" deep pans. Click on the appropriate link and it will show you how many cups of batter you need for a circle or square pan.

Hmm.. I just went to double check the wilton chart and it is saying that a 10" sq and round both need 6 cups of batter, I would add another 3/4-1cup extra in the square. I would rather have it be to high and cut off than worry about it not being 2" tall in my pan.
So I guess what I am trying to say is use the wilton chart as starting point and then add a little more if needed.
I *never* measure batter! What a mess!! No need![]()
Just learn how much you need in each size. A 10" round uses one cake mix. A 10" sq uses 1 1/2 mixes. Two 8" rounds use 1 1/2 mixes. There are many more of course but you get the picture.
Each pan is 2" deep for this comparisson.
I will be making the WBH Orange butter cake the recipe states it is enough for 2 10" rounds 3" deep but the last time I did that it wasn't enough I doubled the recipe and had some leftover for cupcakes, I guess thanks for the help
