I'm a legal home baker and I'm thinking of placing a very small ad in the yellow pages. Just something like this: Name of Bus, address, phone number.

Should I put it under bakers or under wedding cakes? At this point I'm only focusing on cakes (all types of cakes) not cookies.

Also, would you put your whole address: 123 Cherry Lane or just the ciity? My hours are by appointment only.

Thanks

Well since you are by appt. only, I wouldnt put the address as to invite people to just "stop by" to see your place of business. My business is backed by the BBB and they switched our listing from bakeries to Wedding Services, but in the yellow pages isnt there a catagory for Cakes and Confections?

No, we have the choice of bakeries retail, bakeries wholesale and wedding cakes.

I'm not going to put my street address, just my city. But I'm also going to list my website.

Thanks for the response!

I guess it would depend on what you want the focus of your business to be...personally I am dying to 'break into' wedding cakes...so I would put my ad in wedding/event planning. Can you let us know how well the ad works for you once you've placed it? I've been contemplating doing one as well, but I'm not sure it would be cost effective. Thanks

I wouldn't put my specific home address. I'd just put my city. I'd list in all predictable categories. JMO.

You can get a listing (name/number) for free in our yellow pages. The printed ads do not generally earn the cost of the ad.

See if you can't get the name number listing (no address) I get calls from my listing.

And, I would choose bakery, unless you really want to focus on wedding cakes.

just my opinion.

My first year in business I just used my business cards and flyers, and had just the free listing. My second year I decided to jump in there with a display ad. My thinking was if people saw the bigger ad it would show a certain success and stablization. That ad cost me $2800 for the year! The big problem was that they put the address as Main St, but did not put the right city. There are a bunch of towns with a Main St. After I fought with them they did take some of the amount off, but the damage was done. When I would get a call they would say, oh that too far for me to come, or I thought you were closer. I managed to get some business from it, but not near enough to cover the ad cost. So I dropped the ad the next year and just left my free listing. You have to really be able to justify the cost, are you going to get enough business from it. I realize that my situation was a freak one, but I proofed the ad and they still screwed it up. Sorry, but I am not a big fan of YP. But to answer your question, I had my free listing under Bakeries and my display ad under Weddings. If you want the Wedding business I would go there, because that is where the brides go for Wedding info.
