Is my cake going to be too top heavy and possibly collapse?
The top cake will be a 6 in cake. It will sit on 7 inch seperator plates with 5 inch columns. The cake underneath is a 10 inch stacked on top of a 14 inch stacked on top of a 16 inch. The 16 inch will sit on 18 inch seperator plates with the 13 3/4 inch roman columns and a fountain underneath. Each cake sits on a cardboard circle. All cakes are doweled except the 6 inch. Is there anything else I need to do to ensure that disaster will not occur?
Thanks!
As long as everything is well dowelled it should be fine and make sure it's set up on a sturdy table in case the table gets bumped.

Your cake will be very heavy.!! At least 40 pounds will be on top of your stand. Make sure your 13 " columns are secured well. You really need another person to help you set the cake on top of the stand. I use the hidden columns alot on cakes that heavy, also I use foam core or drums instead of cardboard circles. Cardboard tends to absorb moisture. Of course you can use the plate system also. Make sure you give explicit directions to whoever will cut the cake in removing the cake from the top of the stand. Good Luck.
Thanks cupcake. I just set the cake up about an hour ago. It was still standing when I left so I hope that all goes well. I knew that I would probably need help getting the cake on the stand so I prepared for that and had some assistance. There were other issues with the cake, though, that had nothing to do with the weight of it. On the top tier, the icing decided that it wanted to peel off in a small area so I had to fix that at the reception hall and then the lady who assisted me in putting the largest cake on the stand accidentally stuck her fingers in the cake as she was helping me move it so I had to fix that boo-boo, but it was no biggie. I've done this type of design before but not with such big cakes. I failed to give detailed directions to the cake cutter though. I hope no disasters occur.
I've never heard of the foam core/drums that you mentioned. I'll have to look into those because you're right, those cardboard circles get real flimsy real quick. Someone did suggest that I put a masonite board underneath the largest cake before placing it on the seperator plate above the fountain, which I did. They said that it would help to balance the weight. Thanks so much for your suggestions. I will keep them in mind for future reference. Now, I'm going to have a much needed alcoholic beverage.
Thanks!
