I have to do a cake for Tuesday for a coworker. It is her 50th birthday and we want to do a black cake. Anyone have any ideas?

You could do black with white accents or the other way around.

Remember, coloring icing black is a bit difficult, and everyone will have blue lips and teeth. yuck.

Black fondant accents would work, or even all black fondant. Buy it, and save yourself a lot of work.

If I have a request for black I do everything I can to talk people into using Fondant. You can make your own Marshmallow fondant and color the melted marshmallows before adding the PS. I have noticed that the black doesn't get on everything as much.

I did have a grave digger cake to make and they only wanted buttercream. So what I did was color my BC batch (in the mixer took less of a toll on my arms for mixing) as dark as I could get it. It was really a dark grey. Then I used the black spray from Wilton (in the can) and did a few layers and let dry between layers. It didn't take as much spray and it didn't take as much black to color the icing. It worked well for me b/c the whole cake was black.

I haven't posted the gravedigger out of buttercream b/c I am still waiting for a picture from my customer (darn camera battery went bad) however I have a black round cake in my photos that I used the black MMF on and it worked great.

HTH

could you just airbrush the cake black so this way they aren't eating completly black frosting and then getting colored teeth, lips and tongues?...

well, I always start with a light chocolate buttercream before adding black or red frosting and it doesn't take nearly as much color. The latest cake in my gallery was made by doing the colors that way. They're just accents but I'd cover a cake in that as well. It still tastes good if you have the cocoa in there.

right a dark chocolate frosting tinted with black food coloring would work well also if she's insistant on black icing.
