meaning the new Wilton kit, or is there some other way I can make
the turets? I really don't want to fork out the $$, and most people I've heard talk about it say they have a hard time getting the turets to stay.
I want to tackle a castle cake for my daughters bday, so any tips you can give are greatly appreciated!
TIA!
I'm sorry that I can't help you about the kit, but I know people have used jelly rolls to make the turets (they can then be covered in fondant).
Here are castle cake tutorials:

I have used paper towel rolls covered in fondant
they seem nicer then the cake kit ones, because they're wider.. the ones that come in the kit are really skinny. I just used icing to stick an ice cream cone on the top of the paper towel rolls and then covered those in icing/fondant as well. You can also trim these to different sizes... or you could use a very firm cardstock rolled and taped into differnt sizes and widths to make them as well. I think the castle kit is a good starting point, but with a little imagination you can go much further with out the cost of the kit and make it a bit more original.

make sure you post pictures!
You do not need the kit. There are several on here that could help you. They have awesome castles on here.

I used butter cookies (they have a whole in the middle of them) for my turrets topped with the ice cream cones. I used RI to glue them together and put a dowel down through them to hold them in place.
I wouldn't buy the kit - you can do it without!
