I want to try a fondant or gumpaste bow for a cake for a cousin at the end of the month. But...even though I have worked with fondant before I am scared to death that the bow will not turn out. I want to do one of the full loopy bows with curly q's coming out around it. Should I try to do it in gumpaste even though I have never worked with it? Can any of you bow specialist give me some hints and maybe some secrets to making these? How long should I make it before I need to put it on the cake AND can I make these ON the cake or should I do it off the cake? Then one final question do you have to use the same color luster dust as the color of the fondant to make it shine? Which one is nicer...luster dust or pearl dust?

Thank you so much for any help you can give me

Keep in mind it is only cake and icing. If the bow fails-and I'm sure you will do fine- you can always add flowers.

Gumpaste of 50/50 gp and fondant are best for bow making. GP dries faster and harder than just fondant.

You can start now to assemble you bow. Use the instructions in the articles section.

It helps to assemble the bow and a small cardboard circle. then it can be moved and manipulated without damaging the cake.

Okay first let me say i'm not a specialist.

But i would start on that bow soon, make your loops out of gumpaste, you'll have a sturdier bow. I like to make my bows ahead of time, then i have time to do it over if i don't like it. Make a lot of loops, i use about 20 per loopy bow. Make your streamers up all ahead of time. Let dry throughly.

Put together with chocolate the same or similar color as the loops, you'll be able to get the bow together quicker then if your using RI.

I make my bows on waxed paper, taped on either a cake circle the same size as the cake top will be, or on the back of a pan the same size as the cake top will be.

I prefer pearl dust, and no it doesn't need to be in the same color as the bow. Super pearl is my favorite.
