This post has been moved into the Lounge since it has become so huge.
Let's leave this post to just posting our feelings about Steve Irwin's death and not attack anyone else for how they feel. If it cannot stay that way, then yes this thread will have to be locked, so please do not let it come to that.

I learned about it first in here, then it was all over the news here. What happened was a terrible accident. Just to prove that when it's your time to go, it's your time to go! Many people swim around those everyday, and he had to get stung in the wrong body part! We learned so much from his tv shows. I'm so sad that he had to go so soon...

Steve, rest in peace...

I just watched Larry King, he had a bunch of animal conservationists on talking about the infamous Croc Hunter. It was absolutely heart wrenching. (The first time I have ever cried watching Larry King!) It was amazing to see the respect and admiration that people like Jack Hannah and Phillipe Cousteau were showing for Steve. He would be pleased to see how much he is loved! Some of the footage they showed with him and his daughter tore my heart wide open!!

This is so weird. Today my daughter brought home a book called The Friendly Crocodile. She is learning to read so she brings home level reading books and this was one of them. It helped to open up conversations about his death. Since she is only 8. She said I got this because Steve died. She really doesn't understand this yet and we are still working through this. So we are still learning about Steve. I have 2 levels to deal with. My son who understands and needs support and my little daughter who is thinking about a girl losing her Daddy. She is very devestated. She has questions that are hard to answer. I pray for Steve's children and his Wife. They need all our support to carry on. Love the Christensens

I found out about this today in my biology class. My professor explained that when the barb penetrates you, of course it causes a wound, but when you pull the barb out, that's when the poison is released into your body. He did state that he (my professor), had been stung by one in his hand before, and had to be rushed to the emergency room before the poison travelled in his body and killed him. He made the statement that Steve probably didn't feel any pain because he pulled the barb out immediately once he was penetrated (reflexive reaction), and was killed immediately. I hope he knows what he is talking about and I'm not looking like a nut posting this. I just wanted to say that so that most of you could maybe feel better knowing his death was instantaneous and he didn't suffer. I wasn't a huge fan, but everyone knew who he was and he made everyone laugh. My condolences to his fans and family.

For anyone interested, there will be a Barbara Walters interview with Terri Irwin airing Wednesday night on ABC. Just saw the article online; http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060927/ap_en_tv/tv_crocodile_hunter;_ylt=Ak0cam6dj071Pw_Z_gSU2lvQbbUC;_ylu=X3oDMTA3YXYwNDRrBHNlYwM3NjI-

It is being advertised as her first official interview since Steve's death. From what I can find it is scheduled to air at 10pm (EST), it will be a 1 hour "20/20" exclusive.

Thanks, gmcakes. Barbara Walters talked about tonight's interview on The View this morning. Looks like it will be very poignant and emotional. I will be watching it. RIP, Steve.

Darnit! I missed it. I hope it will be on again. DH and I were out cruising (following a smoke scent trail) trying to ascertain if some stupid hunter had started a forest fire. We live 10 miles from town on our 50 acres of woods and protect them fiercely.

On another note: I felt like Steve was a kindred spirit of sorts because I was raised just like Steve was. I was still in diapers when my father took me down 15 feet on my first dive...that mask covered my whole face. (He'd taught me how to hold my breath), and it was the first step of a long string of great adventures I'd share with him. Daddy wrestled big Alligators for fun. We hand caught rattlesnakes, stone crabs, stingrays, gators...name it. My family still laughs about the baby Gator that latched onto my finger in 3rd grade and I wouldn't let anyone hurt it getting it off. We swam with sharks and laughed at the tourists. Color me 5th generation Florida native.

When SteveO would explain his childhood I'd be thinking "sure, that is normal" and smile. I come from a family that is very involved with wildlife conservation, and I hope I can teach my grandkids the exact same values my father taught me. (Odds are good because I rubbed off on my daughter enough for her to obtain her Veterinary degree). icon_wink.gif

You see, we are *not* all alike. What may seem wrong or odd to you may be perfectly correct to me and vice versa. I don't do bible, but that "Judge not" line really works for me. Who are we to judge one another? Steve led a great life, and his family shared in it.

Someone made a comment about we shouldn't be involved with wild life. Well I've got news for you: some of us care about Mother Earth's creatures..a LOT. Up until a drunk driver turned my 18 yr old son into a quadriplegic I was a federally licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

Humankind thinks it has carte blanche on Earth to the point of destroying habitat and creatures in the name of progress. Steve saw through it and fought it with everything he had. I've worked with police, fire, and ems...in my book Steve was *every* bit as much a hero as those guys were! Yes he was a showboat, but *that* is how you draw interest to a project you are trying to save. I hope someday to see Bindi and Bob following in dad's boots. Rest in loving peace SteveO.

::stepping off soapbox::

Footnote: BOOOOOO!!!! to talk show host/comedian Bill Maher for making a joke about Steve's death. That was beyond tacky and heartless. I just pray his family didn't see it.

We watched the show and cried all the way through it. It took Terri great courage to come on TV and tell the world her feelings ,her pain and her joys from Steve. She loved him as I love my Dh. I am amazed at her strenghth. I don't know that I could go on if I were her. You can tell that her family will carry on Steve's love of wildlife. And will make sure our planet strives to survive. Animals are as important as we are and Steve showed us that. We need to wake up and pay attention. Yes he was very outgoing and he lived life to it's fullest. And that is what is important. He was like a excersize fanatic who was in great health and walked across the road and was hit by a bus. Who would have thought it. But he loved what he was doing and he died doing it. Like his father said the animals have lost there friend. My family and I believe this. And God Bless him for making an impact on my children. Our prayers go with his family in this time. We loved you Steve we always will the Christensen's

okay, call me a freak..........but for some reason every time I think about it or see his wife on t.v. talking about it.......I start crying, I mean......yes I've watched the guy for years on television...I remember back when terri first started to appear on his shows and thinking "oh darn, he has a wife" (LOL) and then after a while thinking "wow, they are SO in love" I mean it was just obvious......but I didn't know the guy personally....I can't figure out why it makes me so sad, enough that I actually can't keep from crying every time I read or see something on t.v. about him. I have so much empathy for his family!!! I really admired his zest for life and for his family....he trully understood what it means to "LIVE" and he did it well!! God Bless his family, they are in my prayers.

Uh-oh KH... it sounds like you are suffering from something the human lifeforms call Em...pa...thy. I think I said that right. icon_lol.gif

You see two people who are desperately in love with each other, who were meant to be together, and who are devoting their entire lives to saving this planet from the impending train wreck. You get to know them via TV, get to really like them... then something like this happens and you just feel devastated. It is SO natural to feel the way you do. It will fade as time goes. I watched his movie today (my own personal homage) and cried quite a bit through it, even through the laughter. Your emotion is endearing, but be careful, if the borgs get a whiff they'll take you down for being weak! icon_twisted.gif
