I use 2" pans and never use a heating core or flower nail.

I use a flower nail in anything larger than 10". I also use them in anything larger than an 11 by 15 sheet cake. I bake everything at 325 degrees.

The largest cake that i have baked is a 12x18, for a full sheet cake. This first time i didn't use a flower nail and well lets just say i should have....the second time i baked a 12x18 i used a flower nail and ever since then i have never baked another 12x18 without one....so if you don't want to purchase the heating core, for now, you could try using the flower nail(assuming you have one)

Hi USMC_SGTs_Lady! I'm baking a 12 x 18 for the first time this weekend. Do you use just one nail in the middle, or would you use two spaced evenly in the pan?
