So far I have tried Wilton fondant (yuck!) and now I make MMF all the time. HOWEVER - despite the fact that I know I have to finish it off out of the mixer and knead by hand I have still broken TWO mixers - a 6qt Kitchen Aid and my new Delonghi (Kenwood) 7 qt mixer. I just can't see how it is econimically worth it to make this stuff by hand. You just can't get your time paid for.
Does anyone use any other ready made fondants? Do they taste ok? What is a reasonable price and how much can you do with a 2lb bucket? Am I better off getting a 10lb? I just can't visualize how much fondant that is. How many lbs of MMF do you get when you make the large batch?
Thinking of buying RMF for a cake coming up for next Saturday, what do you all think?
I haven't used it myself but I hear that Satin Ice tastes very good, plus you can get it white or it comes in colors. Mind you - a big tub of it is like 75 bucks.....but you can build that into the cost of the cake, only works out to be about a dollar (or less) extra per serving
I too just about killed my KA with the first batch of MMF I made, so I gave up on that proposition. I hear, though, that if your KA has more wattage, it can handle the job better (mine's only 325 watts).
I haven't really done any fondant cakes but I have a big one for October and will be ordering Satin Ice for that one.

Their shipping is really reasonable. They go by the price of your order instead of weight which is really nice. I love this place. I get all of my stuff from here.
I use Satin Ice. Their white and colors is vanilla flavored. Their dark chocolate fondant is yummy too!

I only use SatinIce. I get the 20 lb bucket so I do not have to keep reordering it.

I tried Choco-pan and I loved the taste but I found it hard to work with. It was very soft and stretched easily. I found that about the only way I could lift it to cover a cake was to stick it in the freezer to harden up for a few minutes so it wouldn't stretch and tear. Mac - do you have any tips for fixing this problem?
Debbie
I use a sheet of plstic vinyl that I got at the fabric store. Roll and lift constantly while rolling it out. Then lift the entire piece of vinyl and lay the choco-pan over the cake and carefully remove vinyl plastic.
Some dust vinyl with powdered sugar and others with a very light coating of crisco. Depending on humidity, I don't usually have to do this. But if I do, I use crisco or Paramount crystals (sparingly) then wipe with a papertowel to remove as much as I can, but still leave a light film on it.
Wattage Smattage! My Delonghi is a 1050 Watt 7 qt mixer and I STILL broke the beater attachment right off! (Plus the KA I broke was a 650 watt I think) So no more making fondant for me! I am going to buy a container of Satin Ice and ChocoPan and see which I like best. Once I find out I will just buy the jumbo bucket! As soon as I saw that Duff buys all his fondant from somewhere I saw the light. Not that I think he is the end all be all, by any means. It just made me realize it does not have to be homemade. Also, I love to see how far in advance he works on a cake, I always stress over that thinking I have to get it all done the day before the wedding. ![]()
Thanks for the tips everyone!
I know that he said the other day that his orders are usually made 3-4 months in advance, that a lot of them are 6months to a year in advance. Most from what I could tell he started about 2 days in advance or so. At least that's how I thought the show made it appear.
I have made MMF in my 300 watt KA three times now and it has worked out really well. The head of the mixer didn't get too warm like it was overheating, and didn't smell any - heat?
I just tried making Toba Garrett's recipe, which doesn't need to be made in the KA, just to try it out. I HATED it. The taste was good, but it was so soft. When I went to put it on the cake it was tearing and ripping EVERYWHERE! Uhhhg.
I think the MMF tastes good but the SatinIce is so smooth... I only use the Wilton for making roses...
I have tried Satin ice, it tastes ok...still not the greatest to me. I have heard that FondX tastes good, although I have not tried it. But I also have made MMF with my KA and it did just fine...maybe ya got a lemmon. How old is it? Maybe you can call the company and get a refurbished one sent to ya???
