I made MMF for the first time ever. I'm hooked! It was great to work with. I do have one question though. Once I place it on my cake and trim, what is the best way to 'close the gap'? I pinched it together to seal it but the trim line was still very visible. Is there a better way to make it unnoticable?
mmf should completely cover the cake. the trim line, around the cake board can be hidden by a boarder, piped or a design cut out or formed using mmf. If you're covering the sides and then placing the top on, I've never done that. I'm sure there are others out there that can help with that problem. Enjoy the process. I'm going to look at the demo recommended by JoAnnB.
here's a link to the videos.. they cover square ones too!

if it is a cake with corners (square, rectangle) drape your fondant over the corners first... or you'll end up with wrinkles. if you try and do sides first it will bunch up at the corners.
After you have draped the large piece of fondant over the cake, gently pull and smooth it down the cake at the corners first. The smooth down the sides by gently pulling the fodant to make it fit smoothly. The fondant must be kneaded until it is silky smooth and elastic, but not sticky; and the best thickness to roll it to is 1/4 inch in order to be able to stretch without tearing. It takes practise.
