I bought some of the Wilton cutouts and decided to make a practice cake and cut out some of the fondant on the cake and replace the cut outs with different colors just like they show in their books: http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?id=4A91F300-802D-F658-0B6C8162E2A41F51

I used MMF. Well, I finished covering the cake, got my cut out, pressed it on the cake, and nothing. It left an impression, but it would not separate from the cake. The only way I could get the piece out was by cutting it out with a knife following the impression. Of course, the cake area around the cut out was all messy by then. I tried in other areas of the cake unsuccessfully as well, so I gave up (practice cake for my family, no biggie).

Is it because the texture of MMF is different from Wilton's fondant?
Do you know how to get around this problem? I really like that technique and MMF is sooo much yummier.

Have you brushed your cut outs with vanilla extract not a lot just brush a little it makes it stick that way. I have used MMF to cover a cake and Wilton fondant cut outs on a pink and purple cake I made and the shapes stuck just fine even the ball border

I'm a bit confused.. do you mean to say that your cut outs just would not stick to the fondant that's on the cake ? Based on my experience, any Fondant, unless it is heavy in weight, will stick to Fondant, as long as it has some kind of glue on it like water, extract, RI etc.... HHHMMMM.. I wonder why this is happening to you.. icon_rolleyes.gif

Sounds like she's trying to make cut outs and replace them with different colors. Could it be because it needs to dry a little before trying to cut it?

Yes mary-ann, that is what I was trying to do (replacing with new colors, not attaching new pieces).

The MMF wasn't dry, I had just rolled it and applied it. Would that work with MMF? How long would you leave it out to dry?

I don't think you'll ever get a clean cut unless you have a very hard cake! I've seen in their books where it says to cut them out after covering the cake but you'll probably be better off just placing fondant cutouts over top of the already covered cake. Sorry not much help.
