I wonder if it is better than the Wilton sprays- I haven't heard good things about those
The Wilton sprays are for the novice cake decorator. They are not luster dusts. Just color. The luster spray is like luster dust that you add to the flowers or cakes of your choice. I had not seen that site that you posted before thanks for the link.
I just noticed them on pastrychef.com this morning....they look very interesting!

I buy my spray lacquer from pastry chef.com. I havent noticed those sprays before.
Even for the "novice" cake decorator, the Wilton sprays arent very good. By the time you achieve the color you want, the product is saturated. It doesnt give a true airbrush effect.
they sell this in my local cake supplies shop. I have asked the lady who owns the shop if it is easy to use, she uses it herself on the shop cakes and she says it is easy and very effective.
Man, I wish I lived where you live. My cake shop doesn't have nearly the selection I would like. I have to try to convince my hubby to take me to the bigger one an hour away when we visit his parents (only half hour from there) but unfortunately we usually go on holidays or such when they're closed!
I saw something like this on a food network challange - Cartoon cakes. The guy was using it on the Scooby Doo Cake. It looked really cool. They called it edible gold spray - but did not give a brand name.

This PME spray is absolutely GORGEOUS. I bought it in pearl, gold and bronze. You just spray it on your cake (works on fondant as well as buttercream) and it has a beautiful shine to it. No streaks and it dries quickly.
I recommend you try it if you can. I love it! It has a bit of an overspray, so make sure to keep that in mind when spraying large areas.
It's just like luster dust you'd mix with Everclear or lemon extract. Even easier to use since you can actually spray this onto buttercream. I'd suggest buying a can and playing with it so you can test it on your own particular buttercream (since there are so many variations). I don't know how it would work on a non-crusting buttercream, though. Haven't tried that.
