I am planning a cake for the near future and it requires a transfer. I did another cake today and tried something small and simple, just to see if it would work, since I had the icing and the supplies all out. I found that the icing I used was a bit too thick so it didn't spread well. Can I just add water to my icing to fix this or do I need a different icing?

If I'm using a buttercream icing, I just add a little more milk. If it is a royal icing, then yes I add water.

I use water to thin my buttercream, not a problem at all!

If you are doing a Frozen buttercream transfer, I think there is an icing recipe on this site that goes along with the instructions. I think the ratio of butter to shortening makes a difference.

Take a look at: http://www.cakecentral.com/article12-How-To-Create-a-Frozen-Buttercream-Transfer.html
