Hi,
I have a bride who would like a fountain. I've never done a cake with a fountain.

Is this any different and far as construction than any other cake? What type would you recommend? Where would you buy it?

She needs to feed 250. I'm thinking this would be too many tiers stacked. Would you recommend side cakes?

Any advice appreciated.

I've only done one fountain cake, using the 17" crystal look separators and pillars from Wilton that I got on ebay for a super deal... thumbs_up.gif

It was a snap to put together, just as easy as cake pillars and very strong, but you wouldn't want to put more than probably a 14" cake as the base on it, so it probably have to have side cakes for 250 servings. Mine was a 6, 10, 14 I think. You could use the Wilton stairs set to tie everything together.

I think I'd limit a fountain to a 3-tier cake, never seen a 4-tier on there; not that someone else won't have done one. Anyone else...?

Oh, duh, and my fountain was a Fancifountain. Make sure you have a plug in close to the cake and/or an extension cord. The bride who used my fountain had to go get a generator, which DIDN'T work, so the fountain just sat there... icon_sad.gif It's the blue scroll work cake in my pics.

For the colored water in the fountain, I put it in the fountain at home, colored it, made sure it was the right amount, then put it in a lidded container to take to the wedding set-up. That way you don't have to fool with that once you're there, just set up the cake stand, fountain, dump the water in, and voila.

aww, you're sweet. I loved doing that cake, too. It wasn't my choice of colors at all, but I loved the way it came out.

Another tip I learned on that one--

I arranged all the calla lilies around the fountain and left the whole stand (top, fountain, and bottom) all put together, and just carried the whole assembly to the car and took it to the wedding-- it saved a TON of time at the venue. I just popped the whole set up out of the car, already decorated, set it on the table, and put the cakes on top.

'course it would've been NICE to have some POWER...haha tapedshut.gif

I've done 3 cakes with the fancifountain & the other fountain but I can't remember the name of it. Both from Wilton. I used the roman pillars & a circle plastic Wilton cake board that clicks right into the pillars. The sizes were 16", 12" & 8" All the cakes are in my photos so go take a look. It's very sturdy & that cake isn't going anywhere. Michael's or Hobby Lobby sell these. Also any cake supply store. I don't add color to my water because I've heard that it will not come off of the fountains. Don't know if that's true or not but I don't want to take any chances. One of my fountains cost over $100. Anyway, my cakes were heavy & they did great. Roman Pillars & Round plastic Cake boards by Wilton~ Good luck with you cake~

I did the same as TC - 16" bottom tier, 12' middle and 8" top. It did just fine. You have to get the 18" plate if you are using the rounded edge plates, and it uses 6 of the roman pillars. I have no doubt it would hold a good deal more too.

I have a fountain cake in my photos. (Krand wedding cake) I did a staggered set up.

I do suggest putting the cake onto a sturdy cake board before putting it on to the 18" plastic board. One of the cakes I did the board cracked. I didn't notice it till after the wedding when I was taking everything apart. Scared me to death to think it could have cracked & fallen! I had the cake sitting on the plastic board instead of on a separate board. So since then I use a separate board under the cake then later put the whole thing on the plastic board. HOpe I'm not confusing anyone... not all the way awake yet icon_smile.gif

Do you guys that use that do the same thing or do you just put the cake on the plastic board?

Ok, I got the Fanci Fountain. I'm playing with it now.
The water is not flowing out of it right, in some places it pours over. I took a level to make sure, and it is level.
I've also played with the control.
Anyone know how much water is suppose to go in, instructions only say 80% full, I'd rather have ounces or cups. I think it has too much, but when i took some out, then it stopped flowing.

I fill mine up about an inch from the top. If the flowing stops the floater thing might not be floating. I've had that happen a few times. You have to make it float like a bobber. If it doesn't float the water will stop flowing. Hope that helps you~
