Imho Concerning Comments On My Cakes.

Hmm.. I guess my view on it is that I'd rather have no comments than get forced ones. I also don't feel the need to add another "oh how pretty" comments to the long list of the same. But we are talking about pics without a bunch of comments.. so that's a bit moot I suppose. I also have trouble believing that people would truely appreciate me saying "cute.. but you might try getting that icing smoother."
Be proud of what you do.. you shouldn't need others to give you your confidence. Appreciate when you do get that affirmation.. but don't let the lack of it make you feel unworthy of it.
I too love to read the comments on my cakes. I need the feedback to know I should continue and not give up. I have been doing this for a short time and am not as good as I want to be or think I should be. When I log into CC and go into the gallary I look for the pictures that don't have comments and comment on them to let someone know they are doing a good job and give them a lift and a smile. ![]()
Keep on Cakin,
Kat
I think indydebi said it so well!
For me, the ultimate compliment is that someone saved my cake to their favorites. In my mind, that means that they liked enough that they want to make sure they can find it easily again and may use it for inspiration some day. The comments are nice too, but to be in someone's favs - WOW! That really makes me feel good even if they didn't comment!
Well the last thing I want is a forced comment but its also nice not to feel snubbed once in a while! Half the time I put a picture up, no one will look at it or comment on it. And then I have people asking me how to do one of them and they get all kinds of comments and people saving it to their fav's and saying "great idea" even though it wasnt their own.
Sometimes you guys make people feel like a red-headed stepchild! You have to think that not everyone on here is a professional and are still in their "practice" state. It would be nice to get a boost from a comment now and then. My opinion.
I have to agree with jkalman on the forced comments. I was excited to get even one comment on my cakes until I read the thread about the Gallery Supporters...then I realized that's where the comments on all but one of my cakes had come from. I felt kind of stupid at that point, but I had several hits so at least people were looking.
Then I also think, if they are looking and saying nothing maybe it's a case of "if you can't say something good..." lol
SugarFrosted - I don't think anyone should be afraid to post their cakes. I am a newbie at this, just making cakes and being self taught for a couple of years, and only now am I taking classes. But there are so many levels of talent on CC. If all the cakes posted were 6 tiered wedding cakes with immaculate icing and over the top gumpaste flowers I might be a bit discouraged thinking I'll never be able to achieve that. But, as a beginner, I post my beginner level cakes in the hopes that other newbies might see ideas that they feel they are equipped to attempt. (If that makes any sense?) I'm sure we'd all be blown away by your cakes!

I have been trying to comment on photos more often, as I love to hear peoples comments on my cakes. I am still in the practicing -amatuer stage, and need encouragement. I do have very supportive friends and family which keeps me going. I know I have sought inspiration from this site a number of times. There are amazing cakes on this site and I know that I will never be able to be as good as some of you. I have some cakes that have up to 17 people adding it to their favs, but only two people or so commented on it. I love the comments, but it is also good to know that people liked it enough to add it to their favs.

Even we "oldies" are inspired by the newbie's cakes! I have quite a few in my favorites, that while the quality is not the "best", it is an awesome cake idea that I want to try making someday. A lot of these are newbie cakes. So PLEASE post your cakes .... your idea and creativity may be just what inspires others! ![]()
I know what you meen im a newbie to cake decorating so when I have hundreds of views of my cake and only one or two comments I gotta say it stings a bit.
I think wow must be that bad no one wants to say a thing! It took me a long time to post anything on here because everyone is soooooo talented and I gatta admit I have not posted all my cakes. But I do LOVE cc everyone is always so helpful with newbie questions like mine and so quick to give you ideas if your stumped! I just LOVE you guys I guess we all need to be better about commenting! ![]()

I think we all need a little positive reinforcement!!
I just started this a year ago and most of my pics have one or two(sometimes more) comments but I too wait for the email message saying I have a new comment. It also means more coming from fellow decorators.
Very rarely do I get to hear/see reactions to my cakes unless its something other then a wedding cake. I was horrified and a nervous wreck when I did my first wedding cake (celtic one)and to this day have not heard a word!! I was so stressed I couldn't eat or sleep over it. Finally the woman who subcontracted me told me that if you didn't hear anything that was GOOD too. She thought it was beautiful and I should stop worrying. The very next wedding cake I did (strawberries) the bride herself emailed me and told me how it was exactly what her and her husband dreamed of! I think I glowed for days over that!! Just knowing I had a part in making their special day a little bit better and that I wasn't failing miserably (sp) at this new adventure was worth it!
I spend days and months even plotting, planning, drawing, and dreaming up a cake design. It never quite comes out as great as it is in my head but I'm still learning.
You do great work! Keep it up!
For those who don't post out of fear.....please post soon! We'd love to see your work and help you in any way if you want. We're our own worst critics and what you may see as a disaster, might be someone else's inspiration!! ![]()
When I first came to CC I would stay up for hours looking at cakes because there are so many. I didn't leave comments (for one I didn't know how) because my skill level is so low I gotta look up to look down! I didn't think anyone would take my comments seriously. I know better now. I try to write something more than great job or pretty but sometimes I'm not in the mood. I try to be specific about what I like.
ANYWAY, what I really wanted to say was that you shouldn't feel bad if you only get one or two comments there are like a gazillion pic's in here and most everyone just posts on what is shown on home page or in the forums. If you cruise the galleries you'll notice some beautiful cakes that only have a few views and 1 or two comments.
Last but not least, just cause I am a Gallery Supporter doesn't mean I am not sincere or that it is my job (haven't got a check yet!) I do it cause I enjoy it and it beats doing housework I also get great ideas.
Ok.. I have a question. What's up with the pictures you can't leave a comment on? I've clicked on a bunch of them from the home page only not to find a place to leave a comment.
And, yep.. I'm logged in when I click.
I don't really post my cakes in here to get comments (good thing lol) but rather so that people can get ideas if they are going with a particular theme. I make cakes for my family and for freinds and so long as they like them I am more than happy. Just my .02
I can see the other side of the coin though because many of you are so talented that of course people should leave comments.
lol omaida, you said it. are we all so dang insecure that we would actually feel bad about ourselves if someone doesn't give us a nice compliment? Ya it's nice if someone comments, and if they don't OH WELL.
I agree - get off the pity party.
I think it is compliement enough that someone saved it to their favorites - they took the time to do that AND as someone said earlier something caught there attention to even look at it in the first place.
I'm looking for inspiration right now for a baby shower cake and have saved several to my favorites without leaving any comments. I truly only leave comments when I want to add something that no one has previously said. Another "great job" is meaningless to me and I only leave comments with true meaning.
Honestly, I think you're whining a little about something that is completely ridiculous
I have started thinking about other people in my life who do crafts or whatnot. My mother is a fairly well known artist (around these parts anyway) and she does beautiful work. But since I grew up with it I dont exactly bust a gasket giving her praise. I just see it so much. But I have been trying to get a little better about it though. Same with my MIL. She is wonderful with the sewing, but she probably doesnt get the praise she desires either. I have put that into perspective over the last year and a half since I started doing cakes and try to dish out the compliments more.
I can't help but find all sides of this topic quite interesting. While a lifelong baker, I am relatively new to the cake decorating arena. I had always wondered about how the 'Gallery Supporters' feature works.
Although I sometimes receive a great amount of comments and views, it does not at all make me feel better about a cake I felt I could have done better - or that had so many flaws (of course, I am the only one that sees most of them!!!). I think it is important to have a group of people who see the positive in everyone's work, regardless, because it takes a great deal of effort to challenge yourself to move to the next level if no one is there to help you believe you can.
On the other hand, when no one posts comments, one is left wondering why and it is typical of us females to internalize this, always forcing us to second guess ourselves.
Regarding saving favorites without leaving comments, I personally understand both arguments. Sometimes I look at a gorgeous cake and it has tons of comments, all saying the same thing. Mine would just be more of the same. If it has alot of favorites, then it's obviously a design that appeals to people, whether they leave a comment or not. Then again, everyone wants and needs that praise and positive reinfocement that comes with posting a picture of thier work. I don't take it personally.
I think it takes a great deal of courage to post a picture here on CC given the outstanding talent of some of our peers who are working at a professional level versus some of us newbies. That alone should make you feel wonderful. I am intimidated every single day by some of the most beautiful and flawless (not to mention complex) work I've ever seen right here on CC. Just remember that we all have to start somewhere and we ALL put our pants on one leg at a time!
Someone once told me that 'there are no perfect cakes - it's just that a good cake decorator just knows how to hide his or her mistakes well.' Well said, I say...LOL.

We should all donate money to CC so they can hire a cake therapist...we all need to be in counseling...

Wow! I thought I was the only nut who waits in front of the computer for comments on my cakes. Getting a comment or a cake favorited is an addiction for me. Once I get one it's like I need another and another. Never satisfied. I love the therapist idea. ![]()
I can't read all the pages of posts here - but I will say this (THEN I will go to bed)
I love the comments too! I sit by the computer and refresh my email to see if anything came in, very pathetic I know, I also know the time you post effects how many comments you get, if it goes off the first page too quickly forget it. Oh well no biggie, I can live with it.
justfrosting - feel free to PM me anytime you post a pic and I won't view you as being crazy or needy LOL! That's open to anyone else as well. ![]()
I am often too busy to look through the galleries, or if I do I waste my day or night because I can't drag myself away, so I try to be careful when I start looking.
Anyhow - just wanted to say, I love the comments too, I don't feel bad or neglected when there aren't any - just happy when they do appear. Oh yes, and a "STF" (Save To Fav) with no comment is just as good a boost for me!
Hi, my name is Laura and I am a CC Cake Comment Addict.... ![]()
That's so funny-- I finally figured that out about myself too. Good grief we know it's not the money!!! There are so many times I'm in the middle of something and think, "Why am I doing this? I'm not doing this anymore!" And then of couse, I do. We do like the praise, it's a fact.
I discovered this site not too long ago. I saw the thing that said this site is addicting and thought, "whatever". It is! I am constantly amazed at the God given talent on this site. It's incredible! I'll never decorate like some of the people on here and that's ok. It's just fun to look.
I think it must be the compliments. I don't bake well or often as I would love to but I know in a paid job or as a mother there is not as many compliments as anything I may bake or cook.
Of to finish cooking now my CC addict fixed for the next hour.
Ahhhh ![]()

Well said indydebi, dolfin, jkalman and Gingerela. ![]()
To me it's somewhat human nature to want to hear praise for your work done by your peers: cake decorating or any other job.
I personally enjoy looking at the talent and creativity of all the photos here at CC. The inspiration is endless here!

Yep....Human Nature
(unless you happen to be one of those people who get SO MUCH praise in life that you really can't stand it anymore!)
I'm not holding my breath for that one! ![]()
justfrosting...I understand where you are coming from...but I have the opposite problem. I have never posted a single picture in any of the galleries because I am afraid no one will comment on them, because they are too polite to criticize.
In my heart, I love it when people say nice things about my cakes, but I see so many flaws (which most times I point out to the person who ordered the cake) that in my head I have hard time believing they are not just being polite to my face.
Isn't that nuts?!?
Sugarfrosted, I'm SURE your cakes are better than mine. I mean, take a look at my pics. ![]()
I'm not embarrassed to post them because I know everyone started somewhere (althought I've seen a lot of first cakes that are wayyyyy better than mine) and to tell you the truth, who cares if people don't like them.
At least that's my opinion, I've got a pretty thick skin. ![]()
