I watch for them on ebay- but they still usually go for $100 or more depending on the size.
I have made some from masonite boards- glue 2-3 together for added thickness and strength, glue on some wooded bun or craft feet and spray paint. I like the rustoleum hammered finish pewter or silver- covers in one nice glossy coat and has a metal look. You can add veneer strips to the sides before painting to cover the seems too, and depending on the size- you can glue on other decorative wood trim pieces before you paint too. I've played around with adding mirror pieces to the outer edge and one large mirrored round on the top, but haven't got the look just right yet. You will have about $14 in two 12" rounds (including s&h) and just a little more for larger sizes (masonite boards are inexpensive). The amount of decorating you do will determine the end cost. I usually end up with about $30-40 in one. Be sure to put a business card or phone number on the bottom of each so you get them back too. Just remember the paint is not food safe- always use cake boards!

Have you tried www.Save-on-Crafts.com/weddingcakes.html? They have some cake plateaus at some phenomenal prices.

You're very welcomed! I was so thrilled when I saw those prices that I bought four (two the same) of the cake plateaus. I reasoned that it was like buying two at the regular prices. thumbs_up.gif

I was thrilled too Grace until I got my second plateau from this company, the first one was nice, not the second. I'd go back to this thread for some feedback on this company before ordering if I were you.

i just purchased a 18in round stand for $80 and the shipping was like $20 but it still came out cheaper especially for such a big size

Hi all -
Not sure if theres one where you guys are located, but we have a store called Roses and/or Fred's...they have a plateau almost identical to the one you posted. I believe it was $15. It's really 'thin' and 'lightweight' but when you put a cake (or cupcake stand) on top of it, you cannot tell. It has a mirrored top. good luck!

Shirley, thanks for hipping me to that post. For some reason I thought you had just not cared for the black color in the deepest part of the relief, but that it wasn't very dark and obviously not the top quality you'd expect if having paid "big bucks" for it. I'm sorry if I misunderstood and it was the quality issue all around and not just a preference issue.

I have to say that the ones I received were pretty good. Not perfect, but I didn't expect them to be that way since the cost was so low. I knew they weren't as heavy or thick as the 'good ones' so I guess my expectations weren't that high either, but as someone once said, you get what you pay for and I feel that once the cake is one the plateau they will compliment eachother and any minor flaws in the plateau will be overshadowed by the beauty of the cake. I can understand why the original poster of the other thread was annoyed though. A black spot that shows with the cake upon it would definitely be a detraction from the beauty of the whole setup.

Maybe I was just really lucky that the four I received were up to par.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention and that of everyone else reading and/or adding on to this post.
