Hi All. What a great community this is! I've really enjoyed being a member.
Two weeks from Saturday I have been asked to do a birthday cake for a woman in her 40s. It will be a simple 8" round buttercream. She collects sunflowers and enjoys riding horses but I have been given free reign on the design. I am leaning more towards sunflowers but I would really like to do a flower cascade or mixed bouqet. (My thought was to incorporate different colors and textures--bachelor buttons, sunflowers, roses, etc in shades of blues, violets and yellows).
I have taken a brief look through the galleries and would appreciate any and all ideas/links. Thanks in advance. ![]()
Just a thought: A horse jumping over a fence that is all lined with sunflowers.
Well, I dont know how u could incorporate the horses but what u could do for the flowers is just cover the the cake in fondant flowers and just write in icing over it or cut out fondant letters.

I like the horse jumping the jump with sunflowers - or a horse running through a field of sunflowers. . . of course i'm a horse fan!

how about a fbct of a horse's head and neck on the top of the cake and then do sunflowers out of gumpaste or fondant and put them like a flower necklace on the horse......they would be 3-D and the horse would be flat..........I think that would look cool having the 2 dimensional horse withthe 3 dimensional flowers around it.......then maybe even do a sunflower border around the bottom of the cake!
I love the idea of a horse encircled with flowers on the top of the cake as suggested by KHalstead.
Here's my suggestion. How about silhouettes of horses around the side of the cake, sunflowers boarders and a cascade of flowers mostly sunflowers on the top
How about a 3d horse(lamb pan, or rabbit pan)
You could put flowers laying around the horse, or make a flower necklace.
I think it would be lovely.
ok I am totally seeing the horse standing in a field of sunflowers too lol. But I'm thinking to make it all 3D and easier on yourself, well sunflowers are pretty tall, so make the borders however you want, and make the top of the round cake, a field of sunflowers, and then a horse standing in the middle of it. Your horse would be belly deep pretty much standing in there so you can actually just make a fondant horse without legs (or short stubby ones to sort of 'plant' in the flowers so it looks like the legs are in there.
Just an idea anyway- but there is a photo that that reminded me of, painting sorry. A horse standing in a field of flowers, head down to the ground sort of nuzzling its foal who is laying in the flowers, sitting, whatever horses do lol. you could FBCT that, it's a really pretty pic, lots of detail in the field with all the flowers though. Then do sunflower border, maybe even the whole sides around- not just top and bottom edge. I'll see if I can find the painting.

there ya go, from sallylyle.com (my best friend in HS was a horse artist and I've been really fascinated with horse paintings since then- no, sally isnt my friend, just one of the sites I have bookmarked lol)
Do you know what I mean when I describe the giant horseshoes made of roses that they wrap around the neck of the winning horse at the major horse races (do they still do that?)?
Anyway, how about a horseshoe of sunflowers around the neck of a horse?
