Gumpaste Or Fondant

I want to make a cake with a dragon climbing/hanging on the side, sort of like it's climbing up the side of a mountain. Is this a realistic idea and should I use MMF or gumpaste to make the dragon? I'm not worried about it being edible as much as not being too heavy.

I think they weigh about the same. For modeling it may be easier to use 50/50. It will give you more time for sculpting, but still dry firm.

Perhaps you can drape the dragon so the tail touches the base board. that will help support the weight of the dragon.

depending on how you want it to look you might want to sculpt it out of cake and icing first directly on the cake. when it's hard use fondant and or gumpaste to make the skin and details. skewers strategically placed can help with any weight. if you are molding it out of fondant of gumpaste you should make a internal structure like a skewer frame or a wire one. this will give support and help if it breaks or cracks.

I just made a cake with a fondant dragon hanging/climbing on it 2 weeks ago. I used marshmallow fondant. I had major problems with it--it would not dry at all, and kept drooping. I'd recommend using something else! If I were going to do it again, I'd probably use gum paste.
