WOW!! I thought I was the only one who had issues with these flowers!! Glad to see that I'm not. Mine always come out looking like a blob of frosting. What I can't figure out is why these seemingly easy flowers are so hard for me to grasp but roses were a piece of cake (Sorry - didn't know how else phrase that!!) I am going to have to try the techniques desicribed. Maybe something will finally click.

i have a problem with my drop flowers as well. In my class one the other day, the instructor told me to go slower and it did seem as if they were a little easier to make...I guess I need to take Drop flowers for dummies class!!! icon_redface.gif

Someone else asked this question but I haven't seen an answer: Does anyone else have a problem with the icing sticking to the tip when you pull away? I completely release pressure and pull straight up and part of the flower goes up with the tip. Icing too soft?  Too stiff?  Wrong technique?  Thanks!

That sounds to me like your icing is too thick.  Try thinning the icing by adding just a bit more liquid.  Of course it depends on the recipe you are using.   I do best with a softer, creamier icing.  A good one is this:  http://www.cakecentral.com/recipe/22469/2-icing

Thank you, Kakeladi! I was using an all-shortening recipe because it is for a vegan.  I will try thinning it as you say.

Or you could try beating the icing longer to make it smoother and thinner.  Being all shortening should not effect the consistency that much and extra long slow beating should thin it w/o needing to add much liquid if any at all.
