I just saw some beautiful cookies uploaded by mariannedavis and there is one with impressions on it. She explains she used a mat used for clay.

Ok, I have not worked a lot with fondant, so I want to know the tips for the impression mats. How do you get such a perfect, textured impression. Do you roll fondant over th mat or press it on top once it's rolled out?

And I have Michael's close to me, so if anyone knows, what are the best mats to get there?

I have only used the impression mats indended for cake decorating and to get a nice impression, I roll my fondant first and press the mat on top.

Hi. I didn't know there was a question for me hanging around out here! icon_redface.gif

I use lots of clay impression mats that are found at Michael's / AC Moore, and I've even used ordinary stencils. I just put a bit of Crisco on my (rolled out) fondant and lay the impression mat or stencil on top. Then I go over it once with a rolling pin.

It's important to grease the stencils or the fondant will stick, and that will certainly make you miserable. icon_cry.gif

p.s. Thanks jesaltuve for the lovely compliment!

I love putting impressions into my fondant. I use whatever I can get my hands on from Avocados to lighting panels. I love rolling pins with the impression set into them.
I find my stuff everywhere from Micheals to Home depot. Just wonder around and think about what could possible be cool and if its only a few bucks go for it and try it out.

I roll out my fondant to what size i need then i will lay it ontop of um say chicken wire then i use a rolling pin to lightly go over it to imprint the fondant. I've found that when I use things with stiffer plastic and I put that on top of my fondant it is more likely to crack the plastic so i like to do my fondant on top.

I recently purchased hard cany molds and cut the bottoms out (which have the impression on the inside) and used them for impression mats. I got them from this site http://www.wineandcake.com/browse.cfm/2,972.html I'm using the woodgrain to make a planked floor to cover a cake board.

Belinda, don't you just love Home Depot!? It's funny, I can't look at anything anymore without thinking "Hmmmm...how can I use that to decorate food?" Occupational hazard, I guess. icon_biggrin.gif I was actually rumaging through my dresser yesterday looking for some lace to impress fondant! icon_eek.gif

Speaking of hazards, I'm being fined $5 by my family each time I say "fondant." Thank God I have you kind folks who let me babble on.

Tiggy, that's simply brilliant! Now, I have to go take a second look at all of my candy molds icon_confused.gif

I can't take the credit for it, I got the idea from a class I took last week at a local ccaft store. But it worked so well I just had to share!
