I thought I had a serrated knife but it doesn't appear as serrated as say a bread knife.. am I supposed to be using a bread knife?

TIA

It can depend on the cake you have. Use whatever works, sometimes a smooth, sharp, small knife works better than a serrated knife.

I watched Bronwen Weber use an electric carving knife on a large cake.

I would have several different knives handy, and select one that works.

Watched on Duff the knife they used. As JoAnnB says what ever works for you.

I have used all types of knifes. Paring, steak, bread, and any other sharp object I can find. It all depends on how much control I get with each knife and how much I want to take off.

if using a non-serrated blade, just make sure it is really sharp or you run the risk of tearing the cake instead of cutting it

I took a cake carving class with Bronwen and she just used a bread knife. That's all I've ever used. Once you carve the basic shape you can just rub with your hands to smooth it all out. For the small details in the cake where you might use a smaller knife, I just put the detail in the fondant and don't worry about the cake.

After I saw Bronwen use an electric knife, I tried it, and I love it and I always carve when the cake is frozen!!
