I have been looking for a knock em dead red velvet cake from cake mix. I have tried a number of them and they just have they feel and touch of a light chocolate cake, not that nice richness a red velvet cake has. I am looking for one that maybe uses buttermilk. Any ideas?

Thanks!

You're not going to find the same quality in a mix as a scratch red velvet, but I do use DH Red Velvet Mix a lot - I use buttermilk instead of water. There was another thread recently about this.

I've used DH red velvet cake mix, substituted buttermilk for the liquid called for, added 1 box white chocolate pudding, added extra egg and some Butavan. Makes for a yummy cake, especially with the Mary Kay icing.

With a recipe as simplistic as the quintessential Red Velvet recipe found here: link, why bother with a cake mix?

I'm just curious. icon_smile.gif You can't go wrong with Sarah's recipe.

I made red velvet cupcakes for 4th of July from a DH mix. Doubled the oil, added an extra egg and a box of white chocolate instant pudding. For 1 1/3 cups liquid, I used 1/2 c. milk, 1/2 c. water and 1/3 cup coconut creme coffee creamer. I haven't eaten of the cupcakes yet, but those who have said they're really moist and yummy!

Thanks for all the ideas! I am just not a scratch cake baker, they just never turn out for me. I Just love how much easier cake mix recipes are and I have been very disapointed with DH Red Velvet. So am glad you sent me the other link, as I see I am not alone! Will try the pudding and buttermilk mix!

I've always used the DH with a box of chocolate pudding and the extra egg. I do sub buttermilk (when I have it on hand) for the red velvet cake and for chocolate cakes.
