Hello all, I'm originally from Ohio ...Tiltonsville to be exact. It's between Steubenville, OH and Wheeling, WV...right along the river. Lived there for 32 years and visit at least 4 times a year. I'm in WA state now and wishing wishing wishing that the guidelines for becoming legal were as easy here as they are there....UGH...for now I'm staying "under the radar" because I swear...I'm not telling anyone...not even the health dept. what color underwear I'm wearing today....it's that ridiculous!!!
I bake mainly for fun/family so I have no idea about licensing, but I AM from Columbus.
Rae,
Thanks for posting info on th DOS! I plan on going, so we'll have to meet up!

Hello Fellow Buckeyes!! I am in Marietta, Ohio. I started out as a "Cottage Food" Business and recently (3 weeks ago) started a bakery downtown. It has been keeping very busy and I dont have as much time to spend on the computer as I want. I am all for a cake club!! Keep me posted on what everyone decides.

Hey everyone,
I am in Brunswick, Ohio just north of Medina and south of Cleveland. I just posted on the Cleveland cake clubs and events to let everyone know of a class I am trying to get going on gumpaste flowers. I would also like to start up a cake club too. I have a small home business here and I teach the Wilton classes at the Hobby Lobby in Medina. I joined ICES a few months ago and went to the Mid-Michigan sugar art classes a few weeks ago. I plan on going to the DOS in a couple of weeks and would love to meet up with you.
Does anyone know if I need to bring anything to the DOS? I've never been before and would like to know if I need to bring anything. Thanks!
Diana
OK, so I finally read through 7 pages to get here....
I am from Wapakoneta, Ohio -- home of Neal Armstrong!
What is involved in joining a cake club?? How would I find the time???? I'm sooooooo busy baking and decorating!
Also, what are the advantages to becoming licensed? I do it for extra cash and as a hobby. I'd hate to "have" to do it. I am licenced to sell wedding invitations and I get a lot of cake orders from that. But I have yet to find where I can buy wholesale food or boxes etc using my tax ID number.
Anyone know?
Sunlover00---I can't believe there's someone from CC so close to me! I used to work at the YMCA in Wapak, so I'm pretty familiar with it. I went to your site, and your cakes are beautiful!! Wouldn't it be great if there were a cake club here? Let me know if you find one!

I was at the HL in Medina for the 50% Wilton sale a couple of weeks ago. It is about 50 minutes away from me.
I work in Brecksville and many of the people I work with live in Medina. One of they has an antique store (Accents') on the square.
Ok, anyone who would like to do the gumpaste flower class....PM me or email me at [email protected].
Hi everyone,
We now have so many people interested in the gumpaste class that we have to move to a larger location. It will probably be in Westlake, OH. Please let me know if that is ok for you.
Kelley
Well I'm bummed! That's so far away from me. I'll keep hoping for something in northwestern OH
Hey Angie,
Please email me at [email protected]. We can only have 15 and I need to make sure we have room in the class still. Thanks a bunch.
Kelley
Hi sunlover00 I think I'm the closest to you. I live in Ada and am in Lima a lot. When I was in school ( mannnnnnyyyyyy years ago), they took our 7th grade class to the Armstrong Museum, my favorite. I loved it. Nice to see someone so close.

So what do you Ohioans charge per serving for your wedding cakes? I recently was told by a wedding planner in the area that my price was the highest! I only charge $1.25 per serving!! Is that true?
My wedding cakes start at $2.35 per serving (no filling, basic flavor and decoration). I'm in the Columbus area, and I've seen prices higher than mine by other decorators in the area.
That wedding planner is off her rocker! Prices in Cleveland range on average from $2.25-4.00/serving for buttercream. There are a few who are only charging $1.00-1.50/serving but there's absolutely no way they're making any money. Heck, it costs me more than that to make a cake!
I start at $3.00/serving for tiered, just under $2.00/serving for all occasion, and $4.00/serving for sculpted.
Please tell me why people charge less than $2.00/serving for a tiered cake?

A very good friend of mine is a wedding planner in Wapakoneta and, unfortunately, she's not far off. That's why I only do cakes as a hobby....no one around here wants to pay for the work. In the bigger cities (such as Cleveland, Columbus, ect), people are willing to pay more, but around here, there is still the 'I'll just go to Wal-Mart' mentality. Hopefully, that will change as more people move into the area!
If you look in my photos, the celebration cake I did took alot of prep work....I tried to ask for $2 per serving and the reaction I got was "I think that's pretty steep". Since it was for my church, I just did it for cost, but it was after that I decided to make this a hobby!
mlynnb ... are you talking about the beautiful fondant cake with all of the gumpaste loops????? They weren't willing to pay $2 a slice for that???? I don't think I would have done that for less than $4.50 per slice!!! I can see what you're saying, though. I think Cleveland and Columbus areas do have much higher prices because people are willing to pay them. I can see now why you're keeping it a hobby. You are so talented!!! It's a shame that people won't pay what your cakes are most definitely worth!!!

Yep--that's the one! I really enjoyed doing the cake, and seeing the final product, but it's just not worth the stress for so little $. Thanks so much for the compliment though!
Hey...I'm From Delphos.
I would love to be in a cake club!!!
I mainly do cakes for family and friends...
I'm kinda confused about the license's thing...
My instructor said we didn't have to have one.
Is she wrong or is she right?
mlynnb~ wow! what a gorgeous cake! and they thought $2 per slice was high?!?!?! they're just plain nuts!
jescar~
she's right... you don't have to have one. we ohioans can do the "cottage industry" thing. here's a website that gives the cottage guidelines. http://www.ohioagriculture.gov/pubs/divs/food/curr/cottage/food-cottageindex.stm
it was posted on page one of this thread - very helpful!
Here in Australia we are not allowed to charge by the slice. Could someone kindly give me some idea how big your slices are? We also have a problem with the areas where you live and how much you can charge. I did a wedding cake for my cousin a cascading roses cake - fruit cake covered in fondant. The place where she saw it that gave her a price of $800AU for a 2 tier. Naturally she got it for nothing including 250 place settings with gumpaste roses in them.
