Leily, I used to read so much of Dean Koontz too but haven't in years. The last couple I had read seemed a bit repetitive...I should give him another try.

I absolutely LOVE James Patterson books, especially Alex Cross novels and the Women's Murder Club series.

Books I'd recommend:

The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd- loved it! Made me laugh and cry. A very deep and touching story.

Dave Sedaris - Me Talk Pretty One Day or Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim. He is hilarious.

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

Most anything by Deepak Chopra if you're into life improvement.
****************

I need to check out Marley and Me and that book on military brat. I'm a big one. icon_smile.gif

Gemini - yes, it was kind of a sad book, but I love how it comes full circle and how he has to deal with his demons.

I haven't thought of the All Creatures Great and Small forever! I'll have to add that to my holds at the library icon_smile.gif.

Oh, oh!!!!
There's one I forgot - one of my favorite books - we read this in book club. It's great for anyone who has ever had children and likes a realistic look at motherhood and loves to laugh about it.
ref
Celia Rivenbark's - 'Stop Dressing your Six Year Old Like a Skank"
She has a couple other funny ones, but this is by far the best!!!!

Ohhhh ... I LOVED this book, too!!!! One of my favorites! Sue Monk Kidd has another book called The Mermaid Chair ... I have it on reserve at the library right now.

I also love Robin Cook's books. Very interesting, and they keep you on the edge of your seat.

I also loved The Da Vinci Code ... fascinating stuff!!

Oh, and My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult was another great book ... very touching.

I am currently reading an awesome book The Traveler by John Twelve Hawks.

I just recently finished Dean Koontz- The Husband and Velocity which were pretty good. I started reading Mr Murder and it just didn't keep me interested.

I totally agree with all of the Jodi Picoult fans . . . I have every one of her books. She's got such a talent for sweeping up her readers and plunking them in the middle of a moral / ethical debate and for developing characters that you can't get out of your head.

Just finished The glass castle today and loved it! So well written and it just sucks you right in. And the fact that it's a personal memoir makes it all the more worth reading!

I just finished Dean Koontz Whispers. I was pretty good. But I would say so far this year my favs of his were Odd Thomas and Forever Odd. And I think he either has the Brother Odd out or will be soon I can't wait. I am just starting By the Light of the Moon by him.

I have just gotten back into reading. I know have time. My youngest DD is 8 so I can actually relax alittle and read. LOL who am I kidding I get to read when I take her to deliver papers. I drop her off at the beginning of the street I drive to the end and wait SO I READ LOL But I really do have alittle more time now. And she stuggles to read so I want to show her that I enjoy reading. During the school year she has to read to me every night. But she can actually see when I read it can be fun.

kay - I think the love of reading is a wonderful gift to give your kids. We grew up reading the Narnia series and Tolkein. I love movies too, but there's something wonderful about picturing everything while reading. I laughed when I read about you reading at the end of a block while your daughter delivers newspapers. Now that's a mom!

ckkerber - could you even believe some of the things those kids went through and survived? The book was so heartbreaking, yet encouraging to see how far she came. And her writing was so fluid and fascinating!

I also really enjoyed Jennifer Weiner's books - In Her Shoes, Good in Bed, Little Earthquake and Goodnight Nobody.

Emily Giffin has some entertaining ones as well - Something Borrowed, Something Blue and Baby Proof.

They're all sort of chick-lit type of books but Jennifer's are funny.

Another good one is The Dirty Girls Social Club by Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez.

I recently read "Angry Housewives Eating BonBons" by Lorna Landvik.
(A story about a book club)
I've read all Emily Giffin's books this summer as well - fun and easy reading.

I see that some Dean Koontz books have been mentioned. My favorite book by him is, From the Corner of His Eye. The mom in book doesn't bake cakes, but she does bake pies. They call her the pie lady! It's a pretty good one.

Has anyone read The Notebook? I love the movie, but was told that the book is a lot different. I just ordered it from the library.

I couldn't agree more! It was one of those books where viewing it from the inside out gives such perspective.

And I agree with Ironbaker regarding Jennifer Weiner. Definitely chick books but so good. Loved Goodnight Nobody!

Ooh did she write The Pilot's Wife? I read that one last year and although the story was a bit predictable for me, I really liked her writing style. Lyrical is a good word to describe it.

She did. She's written quite a few since then, too.

If anyone is looking for any awesome "Christian" books - I would recommend Liz Curtis Higgs or Ted Dekker. Higgs does some good romance stuff, she's pretty funny too. Dekker does thriller type books that keep your mind in suspense the WHOLE time! I also love Frank Peretti! Just for whoever is looking for some good stuff!

Speaking of crying...The BEST BEST BEST book I have ever read is, "P.S. I Love You" By Cecelia Ahern. It is an amazing love story about a man who dies of a terminal illness and leaves his 30 year old wife to pick up the pieces of her life. He leaves her letters for every month he is gone for a year. I cried the whole time and it really shows how to move on after a death. Everytime I read it I remember to enjoy every day because you never know how many more you have. The book is being made into a movie and it is coming out in December. I have read all of her other books as well. I definitely Recommend!!!!!!!

Another great author is Jane Green!

I just read The Notebook. It was so good I read it within a couple hours. Of course I was almost sobbing by the end of the book! My bf was looking at me like I was crazy, but it must have made him curious because he started reading it today! I can't wait to pickup a copy of The Wedding form the library tomorrow.

Funny you should mention The Wedding . . . I have it on audio cassette. I bought it for a long car trip. I've already loaned it to my mom and sister and don't have any need for it anymore. If anyone wants it, I'd be happy to drop it in the mail! I love getting good books for long drives.

I'm trying to read Love in the Time of Cholera right now for book club. Anyone read that one yet?

Audio books..... I try those every once in a while and my mind wanders - but they are awesome for long car trips.

I recently read a book called Lucky, by the same woman that wrote The Lovely Bones. Lucky was her own story of being raped as a freshman in college. It was very good, both of those books were good.

I LOVE Anita Shreve.

Confessions of a Drunken Girlhood was good, too. It was a 20-something's account of how she started drinking in jr. high and continued into her early 20's, how it affected her life.

I just started "Body Surfing" by Anita Shreve last night and read all but the last 40 pages (my eyes were crossing so I made myself wait until today to finish). Very good book. She's really talented at developing characters and entwining them. And again, there were spots throughout where I'd read her description of something and I'd realize that even though I'd never heard it described that way before, she described it perfectly. She described dirty glasses after a dinner party, with their fingerprints and lipstick stains, as perfect fodder for a crime investigation team, if only a crime had been committed. I would have said, "the dirty glasses had spots". And that is why I'll always just dream about becoming an author while she's already doing it.

My book club just finished reading Pope Joan and everyone loved it. In my own time I've started reading 'historical novels' by Margaret George (Henry VIII, Cleo, etc...). I find these are nice to learn a little more about history but still enjoy the dialogue of a novel.
